Six days after the fire that destroyed the Moria Reception and Identification Center, misery continues on the streets of Lesbos. More than 12,000 refugees and immigrants survive on the road and in Lesbos’ olive groves in marginal conditions.
Set up in makeshift tents around the road but also in patios, even on the rooftops of area businesses (which don’t necessarily work), these people don’t even have the basics: they bring food and water once a day, while the Hygiene is a forgotten concept when coronavirus strikes.
The sixth night he hits the street next to the LIDL, where thousands of #regugeesgr they are still stranded with only 1 bottle of water and 1 food distribution per day. These women from #Afgjanistan And DRC #Congo we meet tonight to cook rice with tomato paste. #Moria pic.twitter.com/CnPYAAZ06P

In rudimentary conditions on the road and in the countryside, some people light fires trying to cook something or heat their food, creating serious fire hazards in the surrounding olive groves full of dry grass.
Strong police forces have arrived on the island, and are making reinforced patrols to arrest them and return to the new accommodation structure, although it is not ruled out that in the coming days there may be a police operation – “broom” to collect refugees.
Only 800 refugees in the new structure in Kara Tepe
At the same time, as of Monday night, only 800 people out of the 13,000 who were in the Moria hot spot had entered the temporary accommodation structure in Kara Tepe.
Of these 800, in fact, 21 tested positive for the coronavirus. They were immediately placed in sanitary isolation in a special area that has been created there.
The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum is trying to persuade people living on the streets to enter the new structure.
The Greek government issued an announcement to immigrants who refuse to enter the new structure, asking them to enter, to go through asylum procedures, which will allow them to eventually leave Lesbos.
With a brochure in English and other languages, everyone is informed that the only way to get off the island is to enter the new structure, be examined and medically identified.
“We want you to leave Lesbos. That is why we prepared this structure. Wait safely and leave legally. Come now to leave quickly!” Stated in the notice.
“We don’t want new molecules”
The reason that asylum seekers don’t want to enter the field is clear: they don’t want a new molecule. The government’s intention was clear and was expressed through the mouth of TIF’s Kyriakos Mitsotakis: there will be a new hospitality structure on Lesbos.
Many fear that the Kara Tepe structure is not so temporary. Also, let’s not forget that the new structure has capacity for 5,000 people, but divided into 650 tents the number is estimated at 7-8 people per tent.
Therefore, it is not difficult to repeat the chaos and overcrowding of Moria, at a time when the government wants closed structures anyway. And maybe one day, the horror of the fire will be repeated …
Most, however, fear deportation. As mentioned above, the asylum process will only apply to refugees entering Kara Tepe. The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum has proceeded with a record number of deportations since its reinstatement. Therefore, the ad that says “come to Kara Tepe to leave Lesbos” should probably be complemented by the phrase “Or to return to Turkey or your country”.
The reason why some #Moria The homeless are refusing to register in the new camp not that they demand to move to the continent or Europe, but because of fear of deportation. They have 2 rejected asylum decisions (and it was easier to evade deportation in the chaos of the old camp). 1/2

Many Afghans believe that living abroad will put pressure on Europe and the Greek government, and thus transport them inland, a fact that is not verified in any case, while rumors have leaked that there is no food or water in the new camp.
Speaking to the camera on the website “On the Island”, the Afghan families said that the new structure is a prison and that is why we will not enter! We want to go. ”
In the morning, there was another march of women and children shouting “Azadi-Azadi” (“freedom” in Afghan), demanding to be transferred to mainland Greece.
Europe’s closed ears
However, the refugee’s appeals fall on deaf ears. They may not understand why they have stayed in this situation themselves, but we should not be surprised by the attitude of Greece’s European partners who, whether refugees or Greek-Turkish, are always first in their statements of support and lists of wishes.
We are talking about the same Europe that allowed the creation of the Moria misfortune, the one that turned its back on the reception of refugees, the one that turned its back on the rejections of Frontex and the Greek Coast Guard, the one that left the Greek islands for become storehouses of souls.
The kindness of the Europeans goes even to the sending of tents, food and other support material, as well as the reception of unaccompanied refugee children. Funding for the new KYT on Lesbos was also proposed to the Commission.
However, when it comes to decongesting Lesbos and receiving refugees from the Greek islands, the European ideal … stumbles.
Only Germany, so far, has said something halfway about the reception of refugees. Angela Merkel, who is under heavy pressure from both the opposition and her government to show more humanity towards the refugee drama, is expected to make official announcements on Wednesday.
But both German society and parties are divided over the reception of refugees.
As Mr Seibert said today, Berlin is ready to accept refugees, mainly families with children from Greece. At the same time, however, he left open whether the German government will make a specific decision on Wednesday about the number of refugees to come.
Berlin is in contact with Athens on this issue, but – as Deutsche Welle reported – made it clear that “the responsibility for the refugees on Lesbos lies primarily with Greece.” And the wise man wanted to say.
