MEPs have taken a hard line against Turkey in a resolution condemning its illegal activities in Varos and the eastern Mediterranean and calling on the European Council to stand together and impose tough sanctions.
The EP condemns in its resolution “the illegal activities of Turkey in Varosia” and warns that “the partial opening of Varosia undermines the prospects for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, deepens the division and consolidates the permanent division of the island.”
In the resolution, which passed with 631 votes in favor, three against and 59 abstentions, MEPs called on Turkey to “transfer to Varos its legal residents under the UN Provisional Administration (in accordance with Resolution 550 (1984 ) of the UN Security Council) “. United Nations) and avoid actions that modify the demographic balance of the island through a policy of illegal settlements ”.
They call for a lasting solution for the reunification of the island of Cyprus and its people that can only be found “through dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation” and urge the European Council “to maintain its unity in the face of the illegal actions of Turkey and to impose harsh penalties. “
MEPs regret the fact that the Turkish authorities have supported the two-state solution in Cyprus and reiterated their support for a just, comprehensive and sustainable solution “based on a bicommunal and bizone federation, a single international legal personality, a single sovereignty and nationality and political equality between the two communities, as established in the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, in accordance with international law and the EU acquis “and on the basis of respect for the principles in the the Union is based.
