The 35-year-old secretary of the Turkish consulate in Rhodes, who is facing criminal prosecution for espionage, was given a deadline to apologize on Monday.

The 35-year-old was arrested this morning in Rhodes and transferred to the island’s Security Sub-directorate in order to present a memorandum of apology in the context of the preliminary investigation into the case by the Attica State Security Sub-directorate .

At the same time, the other defendant, the 56-year-old sailor, a cook on the ship that operates the ferry services from Rhodes to Kastelorizo and vice versa, was arrested this morning in execution of the arrest warrant for the Rhodes investigator. After the case became public and he was fired, the 56-year-old had returned to his home in Komotini.

According to information, the 35-year-old secretary of the consulate would have expressed ignorance of what the ship’s cook testified in his apology prior to the investigation, while the 56-year-old sailor has admitted from the first moment that he was recruited by the diplomat to provide him with information on the movements of the Armed Forces in the southeast Aegean. The 35-year-old allegedly stated that he met the 56-year-old man at a social event in the summer and that they have been friendly since.

Regarding the content of the laptops and telephones seized at the diplomat’s home, he requested that they not be taken into account in the investigation of the case, citing an international treaty on diplomatic secrecy.

Earlier, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry described the case as “fabricated”, accusing Greece of violating the Vienna Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights in relation to the private and family life of the diplomat during the arrest process of the 35-year-old.
