Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the European Union to show impartiality and told European Council President Charles Michel during a phone conversation on Sunday that the EU’s stance on the Eastern Mediterranean will be proof of its sincerity.

According to the Turkish presidency, Erdogan said that “provocative comments and actions by European politicians on regional issues will not help to reach a solution.”

“President Erdogan has declared that the EU’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean will be a test of honesty, in terms of international law and regional peace” during the Turkish presidency.

The same statement notes that Mr. Erdogan “called on the EU institutions.” Member states must act responsibly and remain fair, impartial and objective in all regional affairs, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. “
