When the “ethic of interest” trumps solidarity – One way for Greece is to reinforce arms with new weapons systems – There is no room for fatalism, obstruction or inaction
The results of the December 11 Summit have much to teach us. To teach us not to harbor illusions again, to remind us that concepts such as European solidarity or adherence to the agreement are kneeling before the “Ethics of interest”, which is the dominant ethic (and perhaps the only one) in international relations, to land us in the harsh reality that the defense of national interests is our business and not that of foreigners …
What happened at the last Summit can really teach us a lot painful lessons. But they can (and must) at the same time stubborn us, fill us with determination to stand up to the crucial road race ahead, which is crucial to national problems. And in this race, which is a race in which endurance and speed, Greece must run with all its might.
As a country, after all, we have athletes who can bring us victory. In our human resources neither the mind nor the philotimes are lacking. When we work with courage and method, the results are pleasantly surprising. Just a few months ago, the selective and methodical actions of the government strengthened the national arsenal against the arbitrary and provocative Turkish demands, achieving in impressively short times the signature of delimitation agreements of the Exclusive Economic Zone with Italy and Egypt. Especially the agreement with Egypt came as a “nemesis”, as it is characterized by the Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias against the “insult” of the illegal, in all aspects of international law, the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.
However, the messages coming from the Ministry of National Defense are extremely encouraging. The Armed Forces have been engaged for ten months in an unstoppable road race, which began last February with their successful rejection. a hybrid attack launched by Turkey on Evros and islands with immigrants at gunpoint. The struggle of the military personnel turned into a path of resistance last August that lasted more than four months. with the Greek and Turkish armed forces confronted and with spearheads the two fleets, to informally “confront” in the Eastern Mediterranean in the context of the Oruc Reis challenge. This “showdown” showed him Greek supremacy in the maritime element, after the Greek anti-submarine warfare systems easily “dug up” the Turkish submarines, while the corresponding Greeks remained invisible to Turkish eyes, sending a clear message to the opposing side about what would happen in actual battle conditions.
However, since September, and in light of the Prime Minister’s announcements at TIF, the Pentagon leadership has been conducting a parallel speed race at the administrative level, with the Defense Ministry and the General Staff “racing” to implement the Prime Minister announcements asap. acquisition 18 Rafale fighter planes and four new Multi-Role Frigates, for the total enrichment of the arsenal and the three Branches (with new anti-tank weapons for the Army, high resistance torpedoes for the Navy and guided missiles for our War and A) for the renewal of human resources by increasing the admissions to the Military Schools and the recruitment of the Professional Armed Forces and the Short Rehabilitation Armed Forces. A typical example of a turnaround is the adoption of the new budget for 2021, where the Foreign Ministry finally saw an increase after a decade of crisis.
The same fight must take place in the critical field strengthen our defense industry, which is called upon to increase its level of participation in hiring and supporting the Armed Forces. In this matter we must exemplify ourselves in the way of thinking of our neighbors, who for three decades have been implementing a strategic plan for the development of their military industry, with the aim of being able to independently attend a large part of the needs of their Forces. Armed. . The development of the national defense industry will also benefit the National Defense, since the essential and vital security interests of the country, as well as the national economy, will be satisfied, given the jobs that will be created.
But Chora expects a lot from them. Greek Universities, which through research and innovation programs offered, in particular at European level, have the ability to develop products that can make a decisive contribution to defense and security. The efforts that have been made so far in this field show that there is both appetite and know-how. The demand is its full activation in this direction, as the brilliant minds of Greek engineers (doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, as well as their professors) they can do wonders in the field of innovation, contributing to the national effort from its own base.
The defense of national interests is a constant struggle for it and there is no no room for fatalism, obstruction, or inaction. As a country, we must run with all our might at the level of foreign policy and defense armor, coming out in front of all possible opponents who seek to work against us. Especially at this time, when our neighbors seem to be getting over the worst of themselves, working in every way possible to hurt us.
