The Astrazeneca vaccine is safe according to the opinion issued by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
EMA chief Emer Cook said Thursday afternoon that the agency’s safety committee had decided that “this AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective” and that the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
It concludes that the vaccine is not associated with an overall increased risk of thromboembolic events or blood clots.
Therefore, according to Coreper, no evidence of association of the vaccine with episodes of thromboembolism was identified, while the episodes observed were not more frequent than the general population.
It is also noted that although an association of the vaccine with such episodes has not been established, a note will be added to the vaccine information leaflet for the occurrence of these rare episodes so that there is a state of alert for any symptoms.
Coreper will continue to monitor these symptoms and report back with patient registry studies that have been registered. At the same time, the EMA is launching its own specific studies for these episodes of thromboembolism.
On Tuesday (03/16), the EMA stated that it is still “convinced” of the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Its leader, Emer Cooke, pointed out that blood clots detected by some countries are relatively common in the general population. “I want to emphasize that at the moment there is no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions,” he said.
The World Health Organization has also stated that the benefits of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine outweigh the risks and recommends that vaccinations continue.
The Commission is “carefully evaluating the safety data for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Once the evaluation is completed, the World Health Organization will immediately report the findings,” the WHO said in a statement.
Recall that the WHO previously recommended the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in countries with variations of the coronavirus.
