ELSTAT: Greece is “shrinking” – Even fewer births in 2019!

According to their research ELSTAT for the physical movement of the population residing in the Greek territory, with data from the municipal authorities’ records:

the births in Greece last year they amounted to 83,763 (42,945 boys and 40,818 girls), registering a decrease of 3.1% compared to 2018, which was 86,440 (44,525 boys and 41,915 girls). Births do not include stillbirths, which in 2019 amounted to 454, increased by 35.5% compared to 2018, which was 335.

the deaths amounted to 124,965 (63,088 men and 61,877 women), registering an increase of 3.9% compared to 2018, when it was 120,296 (61,386 men and 58,910 women). Deaths of children under one year of age increased to 314, increasing the infant mortality rate (deaths of children under one year of age per 1,000 live births) from 3.47 in 2018 to 3.75 in 2019.

the marriages amounted to 47,137 (23,278 religious and 23,859 politicians), showing a small decrease of 0.6% compared to 2018, during which 47,428 marriages were carried out (23,010 religious and 24,418 politicians). Coexistence agreements amounted to 7,924, showing an increase of 24.4% compared to 2018, which was 6,369. Last year’s coexistence agreements included 199 coexistence agreements between men and 54 between women.
