The Cyber Crimes Prosecutor’s Office investigated cases of fraudulent sale of mobile devices, through a specific website – online store, at very attractive prices, with the illicit capital gain, from the investigation to date, in excess of 50,000 euros.
The investigation of the case began after complaints, which reached the Cybercrime Processing Directorate and other police services, regarding making online purchases from a website – online store, for which the acquired devices were never delivered.
How the circuit worked
Initially, potential buyers, after searching for mobile phones on an intermediary website, were referred to the partner online store, where they were placed at attractive sales prices.
They then placed orders, paying the corresponding price in advance, either by debit or credit cards, or by transferring the amount to the store’s bank account, at the suggestion of their employees.
Once the deadline for receiving the products had expired and after they had not been delivered, they contacted the store, whose employees declared it impossible to ship, notifying them of the return, which was never made.
A comprehensive police and digital internet investigation of the data and digital data followed, to investigate and clarify the case, the use of data from the collected pre-investigation material, as well as an additional prior police investigation, from which the verified the participation of the accused.
For the cases, a file of ordinary proceeding against citizen and foreigner for fraud committed continuously, conspiracy and conspiracy, gang formation and money laundering, which was submitted to the competent Prosecutor’s Office, was established.
What should citizens beware of
- Before carrying out any transaction through a website, we must contact the online store (e-shop) or the company, to confirm if we will receive a response and if it exists, the company operates and has a registered office.
- Look for information and related posts on the reliability of the online store and how the online store handles customer complaints.
- Request authentic receipt or written proof of purchase.
- Be especially careful when the offer seems too good to be true and the other party is constantly pushing for the purchase to be completed.
- We must always carry out our transactions by entering the respective website address ourselves. Do not “click” on links in emails as they can be misleading.
- To make our payments-transactions only through websites that have the security icon (a padlock in the upper left part of the browser).
