Clarifications are made by Ministry of Education regarding him new way of operating primary schools and kindergartens, which from tomorrow Monday and for two weeks will operate through distance education, in the context of government meters to stop the exponential dispersion of the young coronavirus in the country.
In particular, the Ministry of Education gives 12 questions and answers on how to implement distance education.
- What will apply to schools from Monday?
As of Monday, November 16 and for two weeks, the live operation of kindergartens and elementary schools across the country is suspended. It is recalled that the gyms and high schools in the country are already closed, also for 2 more weeks. Special education schools of all levels will remain open.
- Why is it now necessary to close primary schools, kindergartens and nurseries?
The committee of experts had ruled that schools should be the last to close, if necessary, and their previous proposal to close primary schools and kindergartens was negative. This is because there has not been a trend for the virus to spread within the school community.
Therefore, the announced measures are not indicated by the epidemiological burden on schools. They are merely precautionary measures, linked to the outbreak of the pandemic in society in general and aimed at reducing the mobility of adults. As long as schools are closed, there will in fact be a large reduction in wider mobility. The population of students and teachers reaches 1.6 million people, and if you add a parent / guardian for every primary school child, but also support staff, etc., then the mobile population is over 2.3 million. So, the reason for the decision is mobility, because through it the virus feeds, and the goal is to limit it. The data of the last days shows that:after confinement, mobility has decreased, but not to satisfactory levels. Therefore, it is not an excessive transmission in schools, but a high mobility to and from schools. And mobility, according to experts, should be reduced.
- How will distance education work in primary schools?
Primary education will function remotely in two interconnected ways: with educational television and modern distance education.
–Educational television: From Monday morning at 9 a. M.. -First day of implementation of the measures- the transmission of TV ERT2 lessons for primary school students will begin. The program for Monday and Tuesday is as follows:

- Why does the afternoon lunch schedule for Elementary and Kindergarten students take precedence over breakfast?
For the following main reasons:
- Facilitate families in relation to the number of devices required for internet connection, especially if there are parents who work remotely and older children from Gymnasium / Lyceum who do distance education in the morning.
- Ease families whose parents can telecommute in the morning and at the same time need to help their young children connect to digital classrooms.
- Limit the simultaneous use of the country’s networks by employees, students, students, etc.
- Why is the modern distance education solution favored?
Nothing can replace lifelong teaching in the physical classroom, at school. But while unprecedented health conditions force us to suspend the operation of schools, it is of the utmost importance that the student can see his teacher, even online. Stay in touch with him as much as possible.
- Will the material proceed normally through distance learning?
Yes, the material is expected to proceed normally. We must not allow the pandemic to get in the way of our children’s learning progress. This is also the case of all gyms and high schools in the country that have been doing distance education for 1 week. More than 40,000 online departments operate at the same time every day, 700,000 students and teachers have adapted well to these new conditions, and the program is progressing smoothly.
- If a student doesn’t have a device or internet connection to connect to, what can they do?
- Since March, the Ministry systematically sends technological equipment to schools, through significant European funds and donations it has obtained. This team may be made available, by the principal’s decision, to those students who need it most (based on criteria, including low income, parental unemployment, belonging to a single, large, three-child or orphan family).
- The Ministry of Education has guaranteed the free use of the data for anyone connected to the platforms with which the Ministry cooperates for distance education.
- Even if one does not have an Internet connection, even if he does not have a computer, tablet, smart mobile phone, he can connect to the digital classroom and by phone, local charge.
- How will the student know how to connect to their digital classroom?
Detailed instructions have been sent to all kindergartens and elementary schools in the country. The school principal and teachers inform students and their parents / guardians about the connection details in the digital classrooms.
- I am a teacher and I would like to receive more information and support for the preparation of digital lessons.
- The Institute for Educational Policy has prepared a Guide for educational planning of distance courses http://iep.edu.gr/el/component/k2/1067-odigos-gia-ton-ekpaideftiko-sxediasmo-mathimaton-eks-apostaseos , in which it describes the basic principles to be followed for the most efficient implementation of distance education and is available to everyone.
- There are Open Online Courses (MOOCS) for the rapid training of primary and secondary teachers in the methodology of distance education. You can attend two related training programs (MOOCS):
- from the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) in collaboration with the Hellenic Open University (EAP): https://learn.eap.gr/
- of the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) in collaboration with the University of the Aegean: https://elearn.aegean.gr
- In addition, a rapid distance education training program is launched for all teachers of all levels and specialties, which are part of the strategic training framework (with a budget of 2 million euros through NSRF).
- All information on distance education is collected here: https://mathainoumeasfaleis.gov.gr. (It should be noted that the website of the Panhellenic Schools Network to which the specific reference also refers site is today, Sunday 15/11, in the process of updating).
- For more information, you can contact the Panhellenic School Network Help Desk here: https://www.sch.gr/helpdesk/
- In addition, you can contact the Educational Project Coordinators, who have the pedagogical responsibility of your schools and who are duly trained to guide you.
- What is provided to the working parents of an elementary or kindergarten student?
As in the previous wave of the pandemic, special purpose permits are granted for one of the two parents, both in the public and private sectors, the regulation of which still applies today in cases of suspension of departments or schools by the coronavirus. Also, the planning of modern distance education for primary and secondary education in different areas (morning – afternoon) aims to facilitate families with working parents and children of different ages.
- What can a parent do if their child has left books and other personal items at school?
Exceptionally, on Monday, November 16, parents and guardians will be able to receive books and personal belongings from students who have stayed in school units, after consulting with the school directors and in order to fully comply with the measures to prevent and avoid overcrowding. For this transfer, those who receive the items from the school should send a message with the number 4 to 13033.
