Five years after the tragedy in the operating room, the anesthesiologist is on trial for negligent homicide – What the father and mother of the 4-year-old boy said in their statements.
With the reading of the names of the witnesses and with the first testimony of Father Manolis Paraskakis, the trial for the death of little Melina of Naples began, who died at the end of December 2015, after a routine operation in which she had been sent to the Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion.
The anesthesiologist is sitting on the bench at the Heraklion Three-Member Misdemeanor Court, charged with negligent manslaughter for the death of a 4-year-old girl after a meat operation.
It is recalled that the trial was interrupted before it began last Thursday, as the president of the Heraklion Three-Member Misdemeanor Court declared abstention for obstruction. The vice president also resigned and, acting as president, another president was appointed to the composition of the seat.
In his testimony, Manolis Paraskakis described that day, with absolute composure but also frequent tingling in his voice, while there were also moments when he cried. He said that they had done with religious reverence what the doctors told them about the preparation and that the preoperative exam was squeaky clean. She said they were late to leave and that she noticed the nurses in a panic. In the end, as he said, the surgeon came out and informed them that they tried to wake the boy twice, they couldn’t and that he was having bronchospasm.
“I asked him as a father if my son was in danger. They reassured me. If I knew that this anesthesiologist would take care of my son, after hearing that she used pethidine I would not go to see her. Unfortunately I cannot prove that it matters” My son tried to the wrong way. “he said among other things.
“My son was sacrificed to change some things, as I have learned, at the NSS about the preoperative examination of children and the training of anesthesiologists. It is not uncommon for a child to have bronchospasm, the problem is how it was treated”, Stressed Melina’s father.
She was also emotionally charged the testimony of Melina’s mother, who with tears in her eyes but without outbursts or voices she in turn described the day it all ended for her little daughter.
She mentioned as much as her husband, noting that the information they had on Venizelio was: “His son does not wake up, there is no indication that he is in danger and for his judgment he will be transferred to the PAGNI Children’s Intensive Care Unit”
However, he stressed that when they reached University Hospital “like crazy” and they told the doctor who informed them there that the child is not in danger, according to the information they had from Venizelio, she returned and told them: “They lied to you.”
This particular doctor was the next witness, with her President of the Court to ask: “When you informed the parents in the first briefing did you say ‘they lied to you'”?
The witness replied: “I don’t remember saying such a thing. In the many years I have been working I have avoided such extreme expressions.”
Speaking to reporters before the trial began, Melina’s father said, among other things:
“I have been waiting five years for my daughter to be vindicated. The file shows the errors of the anesthesiologist. Treatment delayed, wrong way and against protocol.”
