Farmers were excluded due to snow at an altitude of 1,000 meters and more in the mountains of Eleftherna Mylopotamos, in Aravanes.
As cretalive previously wrote, EMAK’s operation in Mylopotamos, Rethymnon, to locate and transport three Livadia breeders to safety, had a happy ending.
Farmers were excluded due to snow at an altitude of 1,000 meters and more in the mountains of Eleftherna Mylopotamos, in Aravanes. The constant snowfall and zero visibility did not allow them to move to safer areas, so they remained where they were blocked.
Finally, this morning, when the weather conditions improved, they moved to a place where their cell phones had a signal and they were able to contact the Fire Department. Meanwhile, all the competent authorities had mobilized. The 3rd Crete EMAK under Stavros Kalogiannakis attempted to locate, rescue and transport them to safety.
Speaking to APE BPE, Livadia breeder Elias Kalyvianakis spoke about the unprecedented bad weather and snow that he first encountered as a mountaineer located on the specific slopes of Psiloritis for decades.
“Thank God we are well after our adventure and I want to thank everyone who participated in the operation to find us.” As you mentioned, yesterday at noon he went with his brother, Antonis Kalyvianakis, deputy mayor of Mylopotamos, to his flock to take care of his 800 lambs. “The weather was not threatening, but when we reached our livelihood, the car got stuck in the snow. We called in a colleague to help us with the tractor, but the tractor was “planted” in the snow. Insidious is the setting of snow on the ground. For the first time I found such snow that it exceeded 1.5 meters of snow and a few meters beyond it was 20 points and below it reached two meters. “It is very dangerous,” said Mr. Kalyvianakis.
The three breeders decided to feed the lambs and then, around 4 in the afternoon, try to return to town on foot. “But we could not continue, due to the snow and the storm and no visibility at any point. I told you, children, only our lives. We returned to the fold, lit a fire, and waited for the night to pass, for time to stop and go down. This morning, we started, but the snow, as I said, was insidiously laid. We informed the authorities, when the cell phone rang, that we were fine but needed help. In the end they located us and everything went well. The EMAK people in our areas offer valuable services and make us feel safe, “Mr. Kalyvianakis told APE BPE.
