An explosive mixture threatens the health of the country, always focused on Attica. As the “beating” of coronavirus cases continues in the capital, and beyond, the time available to react and reverse the dynamic wave is drastically reduced, and public hospitals in Athens are on constant alert, assessing its strength on a daily basis. The resilience of the NSS is the most critical criterion that will trigger the adoption of stricter restrictive measures, possibly a new closure in the middle of winter, if imposed by the epidemiological burden, according to “Vima tis Kyriakis”. The red line is that the country’s medical personnel, with an emphasis on intensive care physicians, should not need to practice “war medicine” by choosing who will be saved. Today, the defense of public health and, at the same time, the equally vulnerable economy are still at stake.
According to official data from the Ministry of Health, there are currently 944 ICU beds in the country, of which 606 are occupied and the remaining 338 are vacant. Specifically, the number of beds that have been allocated for the treatment of patients with serious complications from coronavirus has been set at 274 nationwide, of which 100 are already occupied and 174 vacant. However, this positive outlook changes dramatically when the focus is on Attica, which is the core of the epidemic in our country. In the capital’s hospitals, 126 ICU-Covid beds have been activated, in which 86 patients were treated until Friday night. However, despite the heavy epidemiological burden, the imposition of a new blockade is characterized as a last resort by the scientific community. According to “Vima tis Kyriakis”, it is worrying that the number of daily diagnoses, despite showing signs of stabilization, with the exception of some outbreaks due to a series of infections, as occurred in Pella, remains high. It is also worrying that, although the worst case scenario, that is, the exponential increase in infections, has been avoided, the health system is already under considerable pressure.
An important question is why the coronavirus persists in Attica despite the strict horizontal measures that have been imposed. Signs of citizen fatigue are obvious, but the explanation is not limited to individual responsibility, as reported by “Vima tis Kyriakis.” Epidemiologists do not characterize large urban centers as “incubators” by chance: population density creates transmission opportunities, the most typical example being the labyrinthine transport network, while special and vulnerable population groups, such as immigrants and migrants are unbalanced. drug addicts. At the same time, the new outbreaks at the nursing home in Agios Panteleimon and the cannery in Skydra are a warning, reminding us that the pandemic virus is taking advantage of human negligence to spread rapidly.
