Pours is the town where Pfizer makes its vaccines!
Shortly before the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine got the green light for distribution to EU member states, the 24-year-old mayor of the poor, the 17,500-population area where Pfizer is located, told APE-MPE that residents are proud that the vaccine is produced in their area. “
“The excellent location of our city, in the middle between Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent, is a great advantage. And don’t forget that the national airport and the port of Antwerp are only half an hour away.” You can export products from here for ship and plane quite quickly, which is a significant advantage for something that is exported all over the world. “
As he points out, more than 5,000 citizens work in the pharmaceutical companies located in the area.
“Pfizer and Pharmaceuticals in Pours (Novartis and Alcon) employ more than 5,000 people (more than 3,000 people at the Pfizer plant) and about half of them live in and around Pours. This gives our region a big push. “There could not have been a better campaign like this,” said the mayor of the area.
Cohen van den Hevel explains how the area came to the point of being selected by companies to install their headquarters there.
“After the Marshall Plan, the local government launched a series of laws to make the country more attractive for foreign investment. New roads were built to connect the main cities with each other and with the port of Antwerp. “Pours was very lucky that one of these roads was built here and the old farm land was turned into industrial land,” he says.
He adds that “in the early 1960s, a company called Upjohn started production here, and was later acquired by Pfizer and has continued to grow since then, along with other prosperous neighboring companies.”
