The European Commission has reached an agreement with the American biotech company Moderna to supply its vaccine against Covid-19, a European official told Reuters.
Last week, the company announced that its experimental vaccine was 94.5% effective in protecting against Covid-19, based on intermediate results from the last phase of clinical trials.
In August, the European Commission, which is leading talks with companies on behalf of EU member states, announced that preliminary talks had been completed with a view to signing a contract for the supply of 80 million doses of its vaccine, and purchase of 80 million additional quotas.
According to the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the agreement that is expected to be ratified on Wednesday will refer to the purchase of 160 million doses of the Moderna vaccine. The President of the European Commission once again expressed the opinion that the vaccine should be accessible to all.
Ursula von der Leyen, after announcing that the European Commission will sign its sixth contract for the purchase of vaccines tomorrow, said: “ATomorrow we will approve the sixth contract for 160 million doses of the Moderna vaccine. We are building one one of the most comprehensive vaccine portfolios for COVID-19. “Safe and effective vaccines can help us end the pandemic.”
It should be noted that this new contract with Moderna expands the already broad portfolio of vaccines to be produced in Europe, which includes a total of six contracts signed with the companies. CureVac, AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, BioNtech-Pfizer and finally with the Moderna company.
Moderna has received nearly $ 1 billion in funding from the US Advanced Biomedical Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop the vaccine, while Pfizer has received financial support from the EU. This explains why Pfizer vaccines will be available at a lower price in the EU. than in the US (15.50 per dose in the EU, compared to $ 19.5 in the US).
Yield 94.5%
Some days ago, The biotech company announced that the Covid-19 vaccine is 94.5% effective and has minor side effects, based on large-scale research results.
Moderna’s results are similar to those of Pfizer, raising hope that the vaccines will be ready soon and can help curb the coronavirus pandemic.
Both companies used a highly innovative and experimental approach to the design of their vaccines.
“The overall effectiveness was remarkable. It’s a wonderful day,” said Tal Jacques, Moderna’s medical director.
