I am contacting you again, as the second wave of the pandemic is on the offensive. Everywhere in Europe, but now here in Greece. I have to present the situation with absolute sincerity. Point out the dangers. But also to show the defense path that we must follow. Based on the advice of science. Guide, State measures. And a constant lever of discipline, why Individual responsibility is the other face of social solidarity.

I will try to speak as simply as possible about the current reality and how we will approach it. In recent days we have seen a sharp increase in cases. To some extent, this is due to the increase in the number of tests performed. Just yesterday, for example, there were more than 24,000 across the country. But it is clear that in several areas the virus is already spreading at a high rate.

The data shows that And in this new health crisis, Greece is still holding up better than most European countries. We now have more knowledge about how the virus is transmitted. We have innovative case detection and monitoring systems. We have a greater number of intensive care beds. And many more doctors and nurses in our hospitals. Thank you, thank you, once again, for your daily struggle.

But all this is not enough. Like I said, the second wave is tougher.

Now it affects all ages, but especially the young. And it permeates regions, cities and even neighborhoods. By vehicle, unfortunately, the social life itself: The daily contacts between us and the simple habits of leisure and entertainment.

Beware: experts warn that in times of neglect we become more vulnerable to the virus. By contrast, in schools where the measures are meticulously observed, the risks turn out to be much lower..

So I want to be clear: The next few months are expected to be difficult. And since a general “lock” is not my choice, other measures are required. Smartest. More specific. And finally more effectively.

The new measures

Our objective, therefore, does not continue to be the total suspension of our activities. But the local reduction of the dangers that threaten them. Continue, that is, the rhythms of our life but based on the rules indicated by the experts. Make small concessions to protect the great good of health.
Greece now has a map with the levels of occurrence and transmission of the coronavirus and the measures that each entails. These have limited costs to the economy. But they offer a great boost to collective prosperity. That is why they must be faithfully observed.

Our plan, however, is dynamic. Which means that it adapts to the outbreak of the pandemic and the local peculiarities it presents. In the new coronavirus attack, therefore, and following the suggestions of the experts, we respond with two new measures:

First of all, in areas with a dangerous increase in cases, those of levels 3 and 4, traffic will be prohibited from 12.30 p.m. after midnight until 5 a.m. Of course, those who work at night and in emergency situations are excluded.

In short, and in the cafeteria or restaurant we will enter, from now on, with a mask. Which we will remove only when we sit at the table. And, of course, the ban on standing indoors remains in effect.
I will repeat: The mask is the vaccine before the vaccine. If two citizens use it correctly and one is infected, the possibility of transmission when they are together is infinitesimal.

Strict controls

The two new regulations will be accompanied by the strengthening of controls for compliance with existing measures. Store owners who fail to comply, as well as employers who fail to protect their employees, will be penalized. Y, of course, telecommuting will be further expanded, whenever possible.

The effort is great. However, exacerbating the problem requires more intensity. Especially in the management of illegal entrepreneurs in the field of entertainment. The implementation of the two new measures begins at 6:00 am on Saturday morning. Could we wait? Perhaps, given that the situation here is still comparatively better than in other countries. Appeal to youth

This is not a vague sentiment or a blind complaint, but a well-founded finding. And I approach it with the same sincerity with which I speak with my children. Why in fact, It is time for our youth to speak up and act.
I know that all the previous months the Greek children have been tired. I understand freshmen who went through a rough winter and want to have fun. As I know, the blood of the students is also boiling. And so it should be.

At this juncture, however, You young people, it would be good to turn your drive into a responsibility. Be a pioneer in difficult times. Making a consistent lifestyle. And finally, become examples of discipline for the elderly. This, after all, means the youthful questioning of conservative individualism. Genuine progress and true radicalism. I ask you, in other words, to become the true protagonists of our day.

The government, of course, will continue to support companies and workers affected by the health crisis.

The repayable advance provides the necessary liquidity to hundreds of thousands of companies. Insurance contributions are reduced. And a new program fully subsidizes them for 100,000 new jobs. While the abolition of the Solidarity Contribution also comes to further alleviate income.

But our arsenal is not inexhaustible. And the national economy must continue to function to feed society, but also Health.

The vaccine

We have a difficult quarter ahead. I will end, however, with an optimistic message. Because for the first time since the beginning of this adventure appears on the horizon the prospect of having a safe and effective vaccine. And the government has made sure that we receive it on time and make it available to everyone, as quickly as possible. At the same time, flu vaccination is proceeding according to plan.

In early 2021, therefore, with the new year, a new day in the war against coronavirus may emerge. However, until science wins, we must hold on to the shield of responsibility.

I am not asking you to do anything more and nothing less than what we did in the spring, when Greece became a role model. And now, as then, we are side by side. A united group of 10 million. But, as in any group, everyone, the State and the citizens, have a role to play. One by one and all together we can make a difference.
