Coronavirus: New restrictions in Turkey - Daily cases and deaths at the highest level

Istanbul authorities yesterday announced restrictions on weddings and other events in the Turkish financial capital, as the number of daily cases and deaths from the new coronavirus reached its highest level in the country for the first time in more than two months.

Starting Monday, weddings, engagement parties and indoor circumcision ceremonies will be banned, the Istanbul governor’s office said. Children and citizens over 60 will also be prohibited from attending outdoor ceremonies.

The restrictions came hours after Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced that 1,549 new cases of COVID-19 had been diagnosed in the country in the last 24 hours, the highest daily rate since mid-June. Thirty-nine people finished in the last 24 hours.

“The number of critically ill patients continues to rise,” Kotza tweeted. “We cannot be lazy in implementing measures” to reduce the pandemic, he said.

The total number of people infected with the new coronavirus in the country now stands at 267,064, while 6,284 have lost their lives when diagnosed with COVID-19.
