The signs of reversal of the second wave of the pandemic in our country are more evident now. In particular, 1,382 new cases of the virus were announced yesterday, and the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases since the beginning of the epidemic reached 118,045. The number of samples analyzed by molecular methods was 19,438. It is noted that a week ago, and specifically on December 1, the new diagnoses were 2,199 (in 21,000 tests).
According to Kathimerini, the majority of cases were identified in Attica (303), while Thessaloniki reported 283 new COVID-19 diagnoses. Kilkis (58 new cases), Xanthi (52) and Pieria (50) are the regional units with the most cases, except Attica and Thessaloniki.
Yesterday was another day in which the number of deaths of patients with COVID-19 was higher than 100 (102 deaths and a total of 3,194 victims of the disease). It’s worth noting that the death toll from November 20 through yesterday is consistently around 100.
There was also a decrease in the number of patients treated by intubation, which yesterday afternoon was 579 compared to 600 the day before yesterday and 596 a week ago. In addition, yesterday was a day in which a small de-escalation of pressure was evidenced in the ICUs in Thessaloniki. It is indicative that, for the first time after more than two weeks, the “Papanikolaou” hospital ended its vigil yesterday morning with empty COVID Intensive Care Beds. It is worth noting that yesterday morning the hospitals serving the needs of Thessaloniki had more than ten beds of vacant intensive COVID.
At the same time, the capacity of the NSS in intensive care beds is increasing. Yesterday five new fully equipped intensive care beds, donated by the Houri family, were inaugurated at the “Sotiria” hospital. The inauguration was given by the Deputy Minister of Health Vassilis Kontozamanis, in the presence of Taufik Houri, who was hospitalized last spring for a coronavirus in the ICU of “Sotiria”.
Ask for blood
Meanwhile, the Panhellenic Association of Patients with Mediterranean Anemia and Sickle Cell Disease addresses a new call for blood donation. As he points out, “due to the pandemic, planned voluntary blood donations are canceled, since citizens are called to stay at home. Workplaces, campuses, large companies, etc. closed to maintain social distances in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Units of blood collected from these structures are canceled due to closure. ”
As a result, blood shortages are reported in several Mediterranean anemia units and especially in the “Agia Sofia” unit, where more than 700 patients with thalassemia are transfused. Therefore, patients receive transfusions, while procrastination has begun. The association asks those who can donate blood to go to the “Agia Sofia” hospital (tel. 210-74.52.036) or to the “Stavros Mavrothalassitis” blood donation room of the National Blood Donation Center (314 Thivon Ave., Egaleo ) that operates every day from 3 pm. until 8 pm (tel. 210-56.97.986).
