Microsoft billionaire co-founder Bill Gates estimates that the first vaccines against the new coronavirus will be available in early 2021.
Speaking to the editor-in-chief of Yahoo Finance, Gates estimated that there would be a vaccine “sooner than we think, at the beginning of the new year.”
Hopefully we will have two or three of the six vaccines that are currently in the third phase of clinical trials. Pfizer’s vaccine is likely to be the first – they are an experienced vaccine company and they have planned their study very well. “
Gates also estimates that AstraZeneca, the UK pharmaceutical company likely to supply Covid-19 vaccines to Australia, if the trial is successful, and Johnson and Johnson, Novavax, Moderna and Sanofi will produce vaccines in early 2021.
“We will not return to normal”
According to the Microsoft co-founder, 70% of the population should be vaccinated “to reduce the number (of cases), while as long as the disease exists,” the risk of recurrence and reinfection will be present.
As he explained, mass vaccination could prove difficult, as “many people have started spreading harmful conspiracy theories about possible vaccines.”
“The wave of vaccine conspiracy theories that often refer to me or Anthony Fauci (a prominent US epidemiologist) is based on bad intentions, which I did not expect,” he said, expressing optimism that 30% would understands that the vaccine also benefits other people ”.
Among other things, he said it was vital to ensure vaccines for the poorest countries.
