With Greece going through the third week of the universal confinement, a small ray of optimism is now glimpsed, which is reflected both in the reduction of cases and in the positivity rate of our country, which fell below 10% after a long time. This is the reason why discussions have now started to lift the restrictive measures.
However, the pressure on the healthcare system remains suffocating, as more of our fellow citizens are being treated with intubation every day, while the number of deaths remains particularly high. The epidemiological situation in our country is not as expected and therefore the confinement will last at least one to two weeks.
In any event, government personnel have decided to wait a few more days to make their final decisions to lift the blockade and then plan to return to some normalcy, in light of the Christmas season.
The information so far indicates that the removal of the lockdown is expected to begin on December 7 with the opening of schools, while the SMS to 13033 is expected to remain in effect in the new year. A little information, no, we talk about SMS until… Easter.
Final decisions for Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as everything shows, will be made on Thursday, while announcements will be made about twenty-four hours later.
11% drop in cases
The data that the government is studying to make decisions on gradually lifting the lockdown measures is specific, and the government, according to a report by MEGA, is seeing a slow drop in cases in the latest tests of 11%.
This comparison refers to today, with the same day of the previous week. Specifically, today 11/24 some 32,500 coronavirus tests were carried out, while a week ago, 11/17 about 31,000 tests.
So with a few more tests in the last 24 hours, fewer new cases were recorded (2135 ss today compared to 2422 tests last week) and this is first and good news for the flattening of the epidemiological curve.
Of course, no matter how good the news is today, what matters is that the good course continues in the coming days, so that safer conclusions can be drawn.
Different christmas
At the same time, the government is planning a Christmas at home with restrictions on Easter due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the information, our trips will continue to have restrictions and SMS at Christmas, although the economy opens gradually and carefully.
The following will apply during Christmas and New Years:
- There will be no movement from prefecture to prefecture
- All winter resorts will be closed.
- The ski resorts will also remain closed
In fact, the measure to restrict movement from one prefecture to another appears to be extended further, effectively dividing the country into epidemiological zones.
The way back to normal
The information indicates that the government – following epidemiological data – is oriented first to the opening of primary schools, then to retail and to the third and last stage of catering. Bars and clubs will be closed.
What will happen to the schools
Everything indicates that the beginning will be with the opening of primary schools, probably on December 7, to gradually continue secondary schools and high schools.
After all, as both scientific and government personnel have explained, they have clarified that schools are not outbreaks of the coronavirus.
The reason why they closed, first the secondary schools and lyceums and a few weeks later the primary schools, was to limit the mobility of adults.
However, according to sources from the expert committee of the Ministry of Health, even December 7 seems difficult, since the epidemiological situation in our country may improve, but it is not what is required.
In any case, they are waiting for the epidemiological data for the next two days from the government and the pertinent suggestion of the experts to finalize their planning.
When will the stores open?
The most likely date for the opening of the stores is December 14, followed by the restaurant and some restaurants and cafes (their opening is calculated … Christmas Eve), which will operate only with a seat, specific hours and strict protection measures.
According to the Deputy Minister of Development and Investment, Nikos Papathanasis, “we are evaluating the situation day by day and soon, probably in the next few days, it is expected that decisions will be made on the opening of the market and the ways in which it will be done.”
Although the market opens, Christmas shopping will be done with … masks and distances.
He added, in fact, that “we have absolute knowledge of what is happening in the market and indeed at all levels.”
After Easter, a ban will apply on Christmas Day for any New Years Eve in the home, as restrictions on home gatherings will go into effect as a result of the 2020 changes.
The approach “bet”
Finally, the focus aperture seems further away.
The government emphasizes that … until a newer approach we refer only to restaurants and cafes and those with specific opening hours.
The crowded bars and clubs, which contributed greatly to the explosion of the second wave, will remain closed.
The rest are expected to open a few days before Christmas. December 21 seems to be the most likely date.
The specific date is favored since the government does not want to open the restaurant on weekends, where a very large movement of citizens is expected.
Finally, the opening of cinemas, theaters and gyms is postponed for the new year.
The announcements next week
Kyriakos Mitsotakis will announce the release of the lockdown next week.
This was said by the Prime Minister, during a teleconference he held with the Governors of the seven Health Districts of the country and the leadership of the Ministry of Health, where, referring to the measures taken against the pandemic, he pointed out that the government will make announcements next week . having at their disposal a greater volume of epidemiological data.
“Our plans from now on will not refer so much to dates as to concrete data, which will judge our next steps,” he said, adding that now there are “the first signs of a reduction in the number of cases.”
