Concern about relaxation during the holidays – Gogos: “The opening will suddenly be very heavy for the NSS”

Experts are concerned about the risk of facing a new epidemic wave, which will enhance the holiday relaxation if several of the current restrictions are lifted in the coming weeks. “Opening suddenly is not possible, it will be too heavy for the Health System, we cannot bear it,” said Professor of Infectious Diseases Charalambos Gogos previously.

What are scientists afraid of? The risk of a sharp increase in cases due to a general opening of the economy during the festive period, which means that in the first weeks of 2021 the country will face a double battle. On the one hand, fighting for the vaccination of the first population groups and, on the other, having to stop a new wave, possibly even stronger, which will have caused the lifting of restrictions.

It’s like what Professor Manolis Dermitzakis said today, that we must get rid of the reduction in coronavirus cases before the vaccination process begins. “It is very important to have a very low circulation of the virus while vaccinating so that we can avoid the possibility of having a resistant strain, which will then prevail, which means that we will have to start over,” he said earlier today. Professor of Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva, speaking to SKAI.

In any case, it is a common secret that until a significant part of the population is vaccinated, the course of the pandemic will fluctuate, so it is necessary to maintain the measures. Certainly in recent weeks there has been a clear decrease in the curve of the canyons compared to the previous period, while for the first time in a long time, today they fell below 1,000. On the other hand, the number of daily cases during the last seven days, not counting those of Sunday, moves on average to the level of 1,750 compared to about 1,950 of the immediately previous seven days.

The foregoing does not constitute complacency. “If current data does not improve significantly after December 15, even then we will not be able to continue with the open and we will have to wait to take very careful measures,” Ch. Gogos said.

Less than 1,000 cases after a while

A rift of optimism emerged from the number of cases announced by EODY on Sunday, as for the first time since late October, it fell below 1,000, of which 203 were located in Thessaloniki and 164 in Attica.

However, the death toll remained in the triple digits, as another 101 people died in the last 24 hours, meaning that the total number of human losses from the pandemic in Greece exceeded 3,000, reaching 3,003. At the same time, the people in the pipeline “reached” again 600, a figure that does not allow any complacency.
