The Ministry of Development and Investments is promoting the opening of seasonal product stores by simultaneously lifting the ban on the sale of the respective products in supermarkets.

Official announcements expected

This was stated today by Minister Adonis Georgiadis at the two-day online conference held by the Consumer Retail Research Institute (IELKA) on “Supermarket 2030: the man at the center of supermarket strategy.”

As Mr. Georgiadis said, relevant ministry decisions will be announced later that day.

“We are focusing on an opening of seasonal items (Christmas decorations, trees and decorations) mainly because these items will not be able to be sold next year except during the holidays. You will know the finalization of the decision and how it will be done in the next few hours from the Ministry of Development. Of course, from the moment we open the retail trade of these items, the same will happen with supermarkets and specific products will come out of the ban. “

Moved with better rules

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Georgiadis referred to the prohibition of the sale of durable goods in supermarkets, a decision that, as he said, generated discontent and highlighted: that the companies exist, that they have not suffered irreparable damage ”.

At the same time, he thanked the representatives of the supermarket industry (ownership and employees) who during this difficult period kept the market at an extremely good operating level. He even stressed that “the Greek market moved with much better rules, compared to other European countries and showed that we are capable of the difficult.”

He added that in the second wave of the pandemic that has hit everyone hard, the industry still maintains security measures. “I was the first to come out and deny all the rumors that arose that supermarkets are supposed to be coronavirus outbreaks. I want to assure you that I spoke with EODY and there is no scientific evidence to support this opinion. On the contrary, it has been proven that the supermarket market has moved in a form of great health insurance ”.

Part of the market will behave online

The minister expressed his assessment that the period of the coronavirus pandemic will play an important role in changing consumer habits in the future. As he said, many people had never bought online and were forced to make purchases online while several businesses that did not have an online store acquired and adapted to the changes.

One segment of the market will continue to behave more “online” and less “naturally” after the pandemic. However, he assured that the retail trade and its physical presence will continue to have the lion’s share and is a bet for the market, for the ministry and companies to provide good services and good products at competitive prices.

“Let no one allow this adventure of the coronavirus pandemic to be an opportunity to obtain easy profits. This is not the time to obtain easy profits. It is time to take responsibility with citizens and ensure the adequacy of assets,” he stressed and added : “The ministry is at your disposal to solve any problems that arise. We want to achieve a good functioning of the market and this cannot be done without a consultation between us. Cooperation with you is a fundamental link for the proper functioning of the market” .
