A 25-year-old man and a lifeguard battled the waves for six hours until they were picked up by a helicopter in a dramatic sunrise rescue in Myrtos, Kefalonia.
Patras lifeguard Elias Papageorgopoulos shared some of his thoughts on tempo24.news as he plunged into the “raging” 7 Beaufort Myrtos to save the young man.
Elías spoke of the danger of being hit against the rocks, but above all, as he himself said, of the confidence he had in his team on the shore, that he will do everything possible to save the two young men.
His statements in detail:
“I had gone home after the end of our shift, until at 8 pm the team informed me that a young man was in danger in Myrtos. Immediately, we all went to the place together, working out the rescue plan. However, we saw that the young man, although he had been caught by our floating devices, began to panic and could not handle the situation. On the other hand, it was forbidden for our ship to enter due to the 7 beauforts. “Immediately, I dived in and approached him.”
Furthermore, he added: “I knew my team would do anything to save us. I was sure that I would have the help I needed from shore. We are well trained and prepared.” My team, with great difficulty due to the waves, sent us a rope that saved us from hitting the rocks. The floating devices couldn’t last that long and it was leading us to the rocks. The rope that the rescue partners threw us from the shore acted as an anchor. Fortunately… “.
The rescue chronology
It all started when a swimmer ignored the ban and dived into the Myrtos Sea.
The strong wave attracted him and the lifeguard, despite being stunned, returned to help him. In her haste, she did not use the protective rope to keep her on land and was also swept away by the waves.
Until dawn, ships from the Kefalonia Port Authority tried to approach the two men who were struggling with the waves and were held back by a small raft.
Shortly after two in the morning, a helicopter from the port corps arrived in Cephalonia, where it rescued the two men with ropes and transferred them to the Cephalonia airport where an EKAB ambulance was waiting for them to take them to the island’s General Hospital.
