Tensions erupted on Friday afternoon in an anti-authoritarian demonstration over the death of Ebru Timtik in Thessaloniki. The protesters proceeded to a symbolic traffic blockade in Ag. Dimitriou, near the Turkish Consulate. Two Kurdish militants set fire to a paper poster with the face of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The reaction of the Police was immediate. By order of the Director General of the Thessaloniki Police, two Kurds were arrested, who took part in the protest and allegedly set fire to the inscription with Erdogan’s face. In addition, eight more people were brought in and released.
Recently, the surveillance measures of the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki have increased significantly due to the tense climate in Greek-Turkish relations.
