Four channel 80 meters Royal Navy will be ready on January 1 to protect the British waters in case the transitional period for Brexi expire whitout deal for the future relations of the country with the EU, declared today the Ministry of Defence.
There are concerns about possible skirmishes between British and foreign fishing vessels in the event that no agreement is reached on the existing conditions for the transitional period allowing access to EU vessels in British waters, which is expected to expire on December 31.
“The (British) Department of Defense has made extensive planning and preparation to ensure that its forces are prepared for various scenarios at the end of the Transitional Period ”, announced one of its representatives, as reported by APE-MPE.
Royal Navy vessels will have the right to stop, control and restrict all EU fishing vessels within the UK’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which stretches 320 km out to sea.
The Guardian previously reported that two vessels would be deployed and two more would be on standby if EU fishing vessels entered the country’s EEZ.
Tobias Elwood, a Conservative MP who heads the British Parliament’s defense committee, is wary of the decision to develop the ships.
“We are faced with the possibility … of our overworked Royal Navy coming into conflict with a close NATO ally over the rights of fishing vessels,” he told BBC radio.
“Our opponents must have fun,” he said.
On Thursday, a French minister said France would compensate its fishermen and take steps to support them in the event of a failed trade deal in order to avoid maritime disputes.
Britain left the EU in January but will remain an unofficial member until December 31, when the transition period during which it remains in the EU single market and customs union expires.
British Prime Minister Boris johnson and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said yesterday that the chances of a post-Brexit trade deal were slim.
