The Brazilian Ministry of Health investigates 58 suspected cases of Covid-19 infection, after confirming the first case of a person reinfected with the disease caused by the new coronavirus, released today by a ministry spokeswoman.
The first case was a 37-year-old health worker from the northern city of Natal, who was diagnosed positive in June and again 116 days later, in October, the ministry reported yesterday.
The infection was confirmed by the FioCruz research center in Rio de Janeiro.
So far, 58 suspected cases of infection have been registered and are being investigated by authorities, the spokeswoman said.
According to her, these cases include patients who were diagnosed positive and their infection must be confirmed as a separate infection and not as a recurrence of the same infection.
Paola Resente, a FioCruz researcher who analyzed the genetic sequence in the case of the Natal woman, said it appeared that the patient had not produced enough antibodies to avoid becoming infected again after more than 90 days.
Resente told Reuters that the woman had been infected with a different strain of the coronavirus for the second time.
