The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, described the extension of its territorial waters to 12 miles in the Ionian Sea as “absolutely compatible” with International Law, in his television interviews on the occasion of the noise that has been raised in the Albanian political environment . for that matter.
“It is a sovereign right recognized by the International Law of the Sea to extend its territorial waters to 12 miles in each country with access to the sea when this extension does not violate the interests of another country,” he said, highlighting that “this extension has no relation with us. “, to add ironically that” the Ionian does not end in Konispoli “(Albania’s southern border with Greece).
Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Albania stated that the specific announcement by the Greek government does not refer in any way to the negotiations on the EEZ between the two countries of the Strait of Corfu and accused “those who signed the 2009 agreement on the EEZ and rejected the Constitutional Court that try to confuse “citizens” by awakening their national sensibilities. At the same time, attacked the media of his country, saying that “because of a conversation by the Greek prime minister, he rioted in Albania.”
Continuing with this, Edi Rama supported the demarcation of the EEZ with Greece and reiterated that there is no agreement on this issue between the two countries, clarifying that the negotiations on the new agreement were suspended with the coming to power of the new Greek government (p. σ Mitsotaki). According to him, “technical problems”, such as the need to reorganize the Albanian expert group, were an obstacle to the continuation of the negotiations.
However, he was optimistic that the new agreement would be more beneficial to Albania than the one in 2009, which he called absurd.
He also hinted that, in any case, Albania has third-country advisers on the matter, whom it did not name.
However, he claimed that he had personally suggested to all Greek governments, from Prime Minister Samaras to this day, that under conditions where the two sides have their own immutable claims that complicate negotiations, then turn to a third party. friendly way. adjacent to the two countries, assume the role of arbitrator for an acceptable result, or have, in consultation, appeal to the competent international court, something that according to Rama, the Greek side did not accept.
However, he noted that he was not going to resign.
Referring to bilateral relations in general, he noted the willingness of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias, to improve relations between the two countries.
As stated, the “speaking out in Greece in the past” (ss of Albania) forced Athens to sit at the negotiating table on all outstanding issues between the two countries, resulting in the first time a mapping of them, although it stands to reason that the package solution is not possible, as originally provided.
According to reports in the Albanian press, Mr. Rama will be in Athens in the coming days as Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE.
