Several people were stabbed in central Birmingham, England’s second-largest city, on Saturday night, police said, referring to a “serious incident.”
Police said in a statement that they were called around 00:30 (local time) after a man was stabbed in central Birmingham, before being informed of other similar incidents that occurred later. By “serious incident”, the police mean that there is a serious risk to the safety of citizens.
“We know that several people have been injured, but at the moment we cannot say how many and how seriously,” West Midlands police said. According to the same source, ambulances have rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance to the injured.
Police also noted that “at this initial stage it would not be correct to speculate on the causes of the incident,” while explaining that “it may take some time before we can confirm anything.”
Kara Kuran, an eyewitness, told the BBC that “different people came to blows … They were men, women, old people, young people, different people, it didn’t seem real at first.”
According to Andrew Street, head of the West Midlands county, where Birmingham is located, the incidents appear to be related, but their causes are unknown at this time.
“There have been several incidents on Hurst Street, they appear to be linked, but their causes are not yet known,” Street told the BBC.
