The damage in areas of Attica, mainly in New Heraklion, was caused by heavy rains that hit the Basin in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Trees fell in the New Heraklion area by strong tornado-like winds, causing damage to balconies, windows and railings of houses. The wind tore up tents, dismantled posters, tiles and other objects.
At the moment, Plapouta Street remains closed due to the fall of three large trees and traffic is diverted from the Traffic Police, while Marinos Antipas, Dervenakion and Anatolis streets are also closed, for the same reason.
Throughout Attica, the fire brigade has received more than 125 calls since the morning, mainly for felling trees and removal of objects, registering the main problems – apart from New Heraklion – in Nea Ionia, Galatsi, Egaleo, Peristeri and Moschato. . In the center of Athens there was also an accumulation of water in the streets.
Problems were also recorded in the ISAP, on the section between Irini and Neos Heraklion, due to a falling tree. Early in the morning, the itineraries were carried out from Kifissia to Irini and from Nea Ionia to Piraeus. The first car on the train to Chalkida was also derailed, with passengers in good health.
Traffic on the main roads is increasing, whereas previously the problem was more intense on Iera Odos and Piraeus Street. According to Skai.gr, due to the rain, there are traffic problems on the Athens – Lamia ascent, where there was a collision of five vehicles at the Rossiniol bridge, as well as in Athens – Corinth due to the overturning of a truck at the height of Pachi, downstream of Athens. .
At the same time, there were power outages in areas of Attica. The problems are located in parts of the Alimos, Argyroupolis, Neos Iraklios and Alsoupolis areas and restoration according to HEDNO is expected soon.
According to the Attica Meteorological and Climate Observatory of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, the highest precipitation heights were recorded at the Ano Korydallos meteorological station with 43 mm and in the Tatoi area with 33 mm.
Bad weather affected many areas of the Ionian and western Greece on Monday night, while Corfu and Kefalonia received large amounts of rain. Minor problems occurred in the center of Corfu town and specifically in the Spilia area, where the intervention of the fire service was necessary, in three cases to pump water and in two cases to remove branches and trees.
According to available forecast data, the storm front in the next few hours will affect Thrace and the eastern Aegean islands and locally Crete. However, with the exception of the western parts where local rains and storms will continue, the rest of the country is expected to improve rapidly.
