Bad weather “Medea” is just around the corner, with the state engineer on alert to face unpleasant situations arising from the intense phenomena in time.
Faced with the imminent snowfall that “Medea” will bring, yesterday a broad meeting was held in Civil Protection, led by the Minister of Civil Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis and the Vice Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalia, which focused on coordination mainly on the level of surveillance of all competent bodies. In fact, a second comprehensive meeting has been scheduled for next Sunday (2/14) in order to review the situation.
“Medea” brings heavy snowfall and a drop in temperature
Yesterday, in the face of bad weather, the National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued an emergency bulletin of dangerous meteorological phenomena. According to EMY, bad weather is forecast starting at noon on Saturday (02/13/2021) from the west and north, which gradually on Sunday (02/14/2021) will be imposed in the rest of the country, with main characteristics:
- In places heavy snowfall
- The big one temperature drop from north to south gradually,
of the order of 14-18 degrees Celsius and strong frosts - Very stormy north winds, locally at storm level
in the aegean - Heavy rains and thunderstorms
- Snowfall will occur from Saturday (02-13-2021)
noon in the mountains and semi-mountains of the center and north of the country
and gradually on the plains of northern Greece. Phenomena
will be strong in western and central Macedonia, Thessaly,
central continental and temporarily in Epirus.
Sunday (02/14) Heavy snowfall will affect the exterior
of the aforementioned regions and eastern Macedonia, the
Thrace, the northern Aegean islands, the Sporades, the mountains and
East Sterea semi-mountains, Evia and its mountains
Peloponnesus. At night it will also snow in the mountains of Crete.
and in areas of eastern Sterea and Evia with low
altitude.
From Monday (02/15) the snow will weaken in
west and north, but will continue at times intense
on the eastern continent, including Attica.
Strong frosts will occur from Sunday (02-14-2021) in the north and from Monday in the rest of the continent, mainly in the central country. Also, in Macedonia and Thrace areas, it will be in total places. The locally hard frost will last until the end of the week.
Stormy north-northeast winds from 7 to 8 Beaufort will prevail from Saturday night (02/13) in the North Ionian and North Aegean, which from Sunday (02/14) will strengthen towards the east and reach the North Aegean at 9 Beaufort. From Monday (02/15) to Wednesday (02/17) strong winds will blow in the Aegean locally with a storm level of 10 Beaufort.

- In the Aegean islands and temporarily in Crete from Sunday morning (02-14-2021) until afternoon.
It is recalled that the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has posted on its website a detailed guide on what citizens should take into account during the intense meteorological phenomena that “Medea” brings.
Arnaoutoglou: We have years to see such a severe winter
In turn, the weather presenter Sakis Arnaoutoglou did not rule out the possibility of travel problems, even in large cities, Thessaly, Macedonia, including Thessaloniki, while speaking of Attica, said that “Almost all of Attica, even the coastal areas, it is not ruled out that during Monday and especially in the second half of the day we will have snowfall, especially more dense in the more mountainous and northern areas.”
As you mentioned in yesterday’s ERT3 weather report, as of today Friday, mercury is expected to show a particularly noticeable drop in northern Greece, especially in Macedonia and Thrace, but also in Thessaloniki, a strong Vardar will prevail. The northerly winds will affect much of the country on Friday (2/12) but they do not appear to drop the temperature as significantly as in the northern regions of Greece.
He also said that “essentially Friday will pass without phenomena, we will have sun with relative” teeth “in northern Greece, a harbinger of what will follow during the weekend as a serious deterioration of the weather is expected, heavy winter in the center. and mainly northern Greece on Saturday and especially on Sunday with heavy snowfalls even in coastal areas and a new significant drop in temperature “.
the Saturday (2/13) He said that snowfall is expected in Thessaloniki, which will be quite dense as we walk into the second half of the day.
“On Saturday morning there will be heavy snowfalls in the west. Macedonia, Epirus and western Thessaly – northwest. Until the afternoon and especially at night, all of northern Greece and especially Macedonia, will have heavy snowfalls.” Rains and storms on Saturday in the west and in the rest of the country, also rainy, but very cold with snowfall initially occurring in the more mountainous parts “, highlighted Mr. Arnaoutoglou.
Especially for Sunday, he said that “we have years to see such a heavy winter, as snow will appear almost everywhere. “On Sunday in the central and northern areas, non-slip chains will be needed, even in large cities.”
On Monday, while continuing “in the West and North the weather will improve only in terms of phenomena, I emphasize this. We will have snowfall in the North Aegean and sometimes dense in Evia, in the Eastern Esterea to the Eastern Peloponnese and almost All of Attica, even the coastal parts, it is not excluded that during Monday and especially in the second half of the day we will have snowfall, especially dense in more mountainous areas and in the north ”.
Is there uncertainty about where and how much it will snow?
At the same time, as reported on meteo.gr, the forecast for snowfall is by nature very uncertain and difficult, as many factors influence both intensity and extent and duration.
According to meteo.gr, in the upcoming bad weather Medea, an additional factor that increases uncertainty is the uncertain movement of a barometric low from the west to the Ionian and how this will be combined with the invasion of cold gas masses from the north.
This is evident from the multi-sample forecasts of the low barometric position for the hours of Saturday afternoon to the hours of Sunday morning. As we can see in Figure 1, the possible locations are very different from each other, with some scenarios predicting their location in the North Ionian and others in the South, while some of the possible locations are in the Central Aegean. This generates great uncertainty in the distribution of snowfall and its intensity.
For example, if a scenario is verified in which the barometric low is in the north of the Ionian, then the area of heavy snowfall will be located in western Macedonia, in the mountains of Epirus and western Thessaly. But in another scenario where the barometric low is in the central and southern Ionian, the intense phenomena will be located further south and the snowfall in Epirus will probably be located at even lower altitudes.
