The first collection of eggs for IVF in a couple with Covid-19 infection, took place today, in the IVF Unit of the 3rd Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens, at the Hospital “Attikon”.

The wife is asymptomatic and the husband has mild symptoms. The couple was referred by a private IVF unit, after consulting with EODY.

The problem arose because the woman, despite the recommendations, proceeded to the final triggering of ovulation, without knowing the result of the molecular test of the nasopharyngeal smear for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Ovulation was carried out by the scientific director of the Unit E. Makraki and the director of clinical professor S. Kalantaridou, according to the special protocol of operations for patients with Covid-19 infection.

Molecular testing of sperm and follicular fluid is underway to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. In the event of a negative result, the embryologist T. Vrantza will fertilize the eggs and freeze them, according to international instructions.

The embryo transfer will take place in the next period of time, after the escape of the Covid-19 infection.
