The Athens-Sounio coastal avenue closes in the next few hours and for 20 to 25 days due to a significant crack in the rock at the height of the two tunnels, also known as Karamanlis Holes.

The traffic police will direct the vehicles to an alternative route through Varkiza.
After a relevant consultation with the Attica Traffic Directorate, the Attica Region General Directorate of Works and Infrastructure proceeds to the following emergency traffic regulations:
one. Total traffic ban on the EO91 traffic stream from Athens to Sounio, on the road section that includes the “Lombarda” tunnel area (Karamanlis Holes) and ends at Sounio.
two. The access of the vehicles that go through the EO91 to the blocked section of the avenue Atenas-Sounio, will be done through the road axis L. Evelpidon -N. Papagianopoulou (Kitsi settlement) -L. S t. Small port.
3. For the timely information and guidance of drivers on the proposed alternative road axis, relevant signage has been installed at the critical “PIGADAKIA” and “YABANAKI” road crossings.
For the proposed traffic regulations, it is planned to continuously display relevant messages on the variable message signs of the roads of the Attica region, while a relevant map will be published on the region’s website.
An extraordinary meeting on the subject was held at the initiative of the Regional Governor of Attica, in which officials from the Greek Police and the competent services of the Region participated. The Regional Governor noted the following:
“Our priority is the safest movement of citizens. Competent teams will take all necessary actions to immediately repair the damage and minimize the inconvenience of drivers. We call on drivers to follow the instructions of the competent bodies as well as the relevant signage of the ring roads for their comfort ”.
