On December 16, an EKAB ambulance picks up 59-year-old “Akis Tassioulas” from Nea Smyrni and takes him to the Hippocratic Hospital.. A few hours later, the man dies and the woman who is called from the hospital for procedures recognizes her childhood friend Elias Mazarakis. The man who managed to escape for 23 years both for the double murder of his grandfather and aunt and for his involvement in one of the most shocking crimes of recent decades, the kidnapping and murder of businessman George Nikolaidis and his colleague Soulas Kalathakis. The Police had the “Doctor” in front of them.

His revelation double murder At the beginning of April 1998 he confirmed what the authorities, but mainly the relatives of Nikolaidis and Kalathaki, had feared from an early age that their people, who had disappeared about four months earlier (at the end of November 1997), were dead. It was Soula’s mother, Kaiti Kalathaki, who had turned to her for help. Angeliki Nikolouli and her show “Light in the Tunnel,” desperately searching for her son. The journalist’s investigation into the case lasted years, her testimony in court when the case came to court was a catalyst. Seventeen shows with tensions, revelations, wiretapping of the double crime “brain” that … demanded that the projection of the documents brought to light by the persistent journalistic investigation, but even threats against his life, compose the puzzle of his investigation . and he played a fundamental role in bringing those responsible to justice, “sons of good families”, as the journalist has pointed out. All but one. Of “Doctor” Elias Mazarakis who was sentenced in absentia.

Dear

As it turned out, Mazarakis, who was also wanted by Interpol, lived, without knowing how long, in Nea Smyrni.. In a neighborhood, unknown among strangers, with false information and his past well hidden. Mazarakis lived “three lives” – first a carefree teenager, then a desperate medical student. Second, the life of the man sentenced to two years in prison for the murder of his relatives and then a fugitive involved in the controversial Nikolaidis-Kalathaki case. Ilias Mazarakis’ third life lasted a full 23 years and he lived it “under the radar” of the Authorities until the very end, when he “emerged” from cirrhosis of the liver in Hippocrates in the early morning of December 17.

How did he manage to live inconceivably for 23 years? Who possibly helped him all this time? How did he leave and how did he return to Greece? Did you do something, did you plan anything all these years? What investigation did authorities do to locate a notorious fugitive? He raises all these questions while talking to “TOPIC” the Angeliki Nikolouli: For the journalist, the story of the “Doctor” was never closed, since the last program about the much praised case and its protagonists was just a year ago.

Everything for Ilias Mazarakis begins in the summer of 1985. The only son of a wealthy family, especially attached to his mother, he angrily takes the plane from Athens and heads to Corfu. He meets his grandfather from his mother and his aunt. Within hours he had quarreled with them over property issues: inheritance issues. The fight ends, and Mazarakis manages to stab the two men and stops when they both drop dead. Three years later he was sentenced to life imprisonment and is serving his sentence in Bodrum prison. At some point it begins to take permits. In the same prisons another person who played a central role in the kidnapping and murder of Nikolaidis – Kalathakis is serving a long prison sentence. In early September 1997, Mazarakis received another license, but this time he is not returning to prison. Around the same time, his latest accomplice gets his sentence suspended. The countdown to the life of businessman Giorgos Nikolaidis, 45, but also of his colleague, whom he had with him at his business meeting, which turned out to be a death trap, had already begun.

Nikolaidis had a wide range of activities and had managed to create a great fortune.. A few years before his murder, the later known killer had approached the businessman. He had presented a business plan with fish farms and exports to Italy, which the unsuspecting businessman had found attractive. However, behind all this was a well-established fraud involving the victims of merchants and fish farmers from all over Greece and direct collaborators of Italian mobsters. Nikolaidis’s approach had only one goal: his money that would provide his killers with an even better life. After all, the majority of the criminal group was rich. In a way, however, it was Nikolaidis’s money that also revealed the dragon.

“A few days after the disappearance of her daughter and Nikolaidis, Soula’s mother, Kaiti Kalathaki, came to see me”, remember the Angeliki Nikolouli. “From the first show, we started to have important testimonials that led to revelations. By testimony, we located the businessman’s car in Kifissia; I remember that when we opened the trunk, in the air of the show, we would find it inside. “We found objects that showed that something had happened to the two people.”

Testimonials and information come at a dizzying pace. Very quickly, the greedy killers spend all the money they can get from their victim. They cash checks, have their gold credit card codes in hand, and spend unlimited. Money, however, spoke. Credit card transactions provide new evidence. “I usually remember that they had bought a very expensive bag whose few pieces had been sold in Greece. We showed the photo of the bag”describes Angeliki Nikolouli. “It just came to our attention then. A relative of the woman who had received the bag as a gift from the double murder ‘brain’ recognized the expensive accessory. We had found the end of the thread.”. As Ms. Nikolouli recalls, the “brain” of the case had reached the point of putting her hand on the plaster – supposedly she had broken it – so that writing with the left hand she could sign checks like Nikolaidis and justify the difference in character. graphic.

Journalistic investigation reaches people and one testimony follows another. In fact, the main protagonist of the double murder usually intervenes in the air of the show. The appearance is constantly changing, while the perpetrators show another woman as Soula Kalathaki; something immediately realizes that she is not her. After all, Soula’s mother never left him. “I remember his agony.” What are we going to do now; What is the next step? “Mrs. Katie was asking me”says Angeliki Nikolouli, who is conducting the long-term investigation with the two families of the victims by her side.

The first months after the disappearance of Nikolaidis-Kalathaki bring to the surface a lot of evidence showing what happened, but the people who had entered the scene still move between la dolce vita in Italy and lies and denial in Greece. «“Even when the bodies were now found in Sesi, the ‘brain’ intervened, insisting that Nikolaidis was alive.”

The central person in the case -observe that all those convicted of the crime are now free- arrested in England. His lawyers are creating a legal shield to prevent his extradition to Greece. Finally, thanks to the insistence of a Greek prosecutor, he is extradited and the case goes to court. And then, however, the tensions are not lacking. Angeliki Nikolouli testifies for days and gives all the data that she has collected in her investigation. The “Doctor” is not in the chair. The information that existed at that time indicates that Elias Mazarakis escaped abroad, was taken to Venezuela. “I testified that his mother probably knew where he was. Mother and son were very close. In fact, he had almost justified his killing his father and sister, accepting that they had been wronged with the property. The prosecutor had also strictly addressed to Mazarakis’s mother, which infuriated him. Then he sent us a message that threatened our life and the prosecutor. “says Angeliki Nikolouli, who during the trial receives many attacks, culminating in the moment when during a recess in the trial one of the defendants grabs her and throws her against the wall, threatening her life.

Mazarakis also made sure to send a letter to the investigator of the case claiming that he was innocent of the case in question and that society had turned him into a murderer, referring to the murder of his grandfather and aunt.

Mazarakis was eventually convicted of misdemeanors. During the trial, however, the man who was convicted as the perpetrator and “mastermind” has singled out the absentee for this role: was it convenient since Mazarakis was already a fugitive? Justice did not accept the accusations. The “Doctor” managed to remain without arrest until the end of his life. However, the question remains: Will you investigate how he spent all these years? “The case cannot be closed on the grounds that he died. There are many unanswered problems and an investigation is needed.”, Angeliki Nikolouli concludes.
