How Greece gains immediate power in the central and eastern Mediterranean: numerous actions to improve Crete at the operational level
Crete’s important geostrategic position is indisputable. It is located between the central and eastern Mediterranean and connects three continents. It is a very important pole of economic and cultural activities, while from the military point of view it offers excellent possibilities due to the advanced position of the island, something that was demonstrated in the recent crisis with Turkey in the southeast of the Mediterranean.
Internationally, the geopolitical value of Crete is also timeless and is evident from the energy of the United States to establish Souda’s Naval Support Activity (NSA) in 1969. Since then, this facility has been constantly updated, while during his recent visit to Crete, the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, recognizing its increasing value, announced something extremely important. The newest ship in the United States Navy, the USS Hershel “Woody” Williams helicopter carrier, capable of state-of-the-art operations, will be permanently based in Souda from now on.
The operational value of the island has emerged very strongly in the recent current crisis with Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean. Crete was an outpost, which our Navy ships could use to carry out their mission more easily.
Furthermore, for our Air Force, the value of Crete turned out to be indisputable, being in essence a floating aircraft carrier that allowed our warplanes to be in the area of operations in minimal time. Therefore, it could be concluded that the always decisive factor of time for business, and that in Oruc Reis’s opinion was very special due to its long duration, was the one that further highlighted the operational value of Crete.
After each activity, from the simplest training to the most serious business mission, conclusions are drawn and evaluated in order to to improve the effectiveness of the Armed Forces. In this context, this crisis gave GEETHA the opportunity to highlight the areas that can be improved and propose immediate actions that increase the operational capacity and dissuasive power of the Armed Forces of our country.
At the initiative of the Chief of Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, a series of actions are being promoted to improve Crete at the operational level. These actions will allow the immediate projection of power in the central and eastern Mediterranean and even over a long period of time. In particular, it is planned to improve port facilities to accommodate a greater percentage of the Fleet on a permanent basis. The infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority on the island is also being improved, which will be able to support a greater number of aircraft of all types, as well as helicopters to carry out various types of operations.
The previous actions have already been launched and the works that will be necessary to expand the infrastructure will begin in the immediate future, and of course they are not the only ones. “Fortress of Crete” is the motto and according to our reliable information, the Head of GEETHA has in mind exactly how it should be done, what it will entail and how fast we will run, and it will go “to the end”.
Our country finally shows that it is taking advantage of all the opportunities that are offered to it through the crises that it has gone through lately. Transform these difficult situations to go one step further and improve your geostrategic value. With the creation of the “Fortress of Crete”, it is updated not only nationally but also internationally, obtaining the opportunity to intervene in the central and eastern Mediterranean, in an area where developments today and in the near future will be rapid. . And we will be prepared to manage it in accordance with international law, good neighborly relations and our ability to bear burdens in honor of our friends, alliances and associations.
