A serious naval accident this morning just outside the port of Piraeus, when a merchant ship rammed the minesweeper “Kallisto”, with the result that the Navy vessel tipped over.
Currently, the minesweeper “Kallisto” is being towed to the port of Salamina.
The accident occurred around 07:30 in the morning, when the Maersk Launceston freighter, carrying a container, just outside the port of Piraeus collided with the minesweeper “Kallisto”. There was a controlled entry of water into the warship and it took a steep incline, however there is no cause for concern. It is currently being towed to the port of Salamina and everyone hopes that the ship will save itself and not sink.
Two people on the warship, totaling 27 people, were slightly injured in the collision and were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
The Maersk Launceston freighter has been banned from sailing until the damage is repaired.
The merchant ship cut the minesweeper “Kallisto” in half
The following photos submitted by SKAI reveal the size of the damage to the mine’s predator:
The merchant cut the warship in two, cutting off its stern! This enormous damage is due in part to the construction materials of the warship. It is made of reinforced plastic and fiberglass, which makes it vulnerable to collisions. However, it is this feature that can help keep it from sinking.
