Your researchers University College London (UCL), including two Greeks, announced that they have solved a significant part of the puzzle surrounding the ancient greek astronomical computer, known as Antikythera Mechanism, and -suddenly due to its time- a complex device that made it possible to predict various astronomical events. Scientists believe that they took an important step to understand all the possibilities of the Mechanism and how it managed to make accurate predictions about celestial phenomena.
The Mechanism, which is kept in National Archaeological Museum in Athens, it is considered by many to be the world’s first known analog computer and is the most complex example of engineering found in the ancient world. The bronze mechanism, which it was discovered the 1901 by Greek fishermen on a shipwreck near Antikythera, consists of a complex combination 30 gears. Its constant study by Greek and foreign scientists constantly increases the understanding of its functions. However, to date, it has not been possible to fully understand the gear system, as it is estimated that only a third of the Mechanism has been salvaged. 82 fragments.
The use X-rays since 2005 it has revealed thousands of text characters hidden within the snippets. The inscriptions include a description of the Universe, with the planets moving in rings. It is this representation of the universe recreated by British researchers.
Two important pieces of information revealed in the Mechanism are the numbers of 462 Y 442 years, corresponding to their circles Aphrodite and his Saturn respectively. When observed by land, the circles of the planets sometimes reverse their motion in relation to the stars. Experts must monitor these changing cycles (planetary periods) for long periods of time in order to predict the positions of the planets in the future.
“The classical astronomy of the first millennium BC was born in Babylon, but there is nothing in this astronomy that shows how the ancient Greeks managed to find the highly accurate cycle of 462 years for Aphrodite and 442 years for Saturn.” said the Greek PhD candidate from UCL, Aris dakanalis. Another Greek from UCL, archaeological materials specialist, Dr. Myrto Georgakopoulou.
Using an ancient Greek mathematical method described by philosopher Parmenides, the researchers not only explained how the Greeks found the cycles of Venus and Saturn, but also managed to recreate the cycles of all the other planets of the Mechanism, for which the relevant data has been lost.
“This is a significant theoretical advance in terms of how the world was represented in the Mechanism.” Now we have to demonstrate its applicability by doing it with ancient techniques. “ said the doctorAdam wojciech of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the UCL.
