Leading Greek businessmen in the United States took a not-so-common initiative, publishing a full-page list in the New York Times urging the government to intervene to stop the escalation of Turkey’s provocative actions against Greece.

One of them is the Greek-American businessman, b. Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemicals, who spoke exclusively with SKAI and George Eugenides.

His interview in detail:

Q: How did you and other Greek-American businessmen make the decision to put an entry in the New York Times, demanding a peaceful coexistence of Greece and Turkey? What message did you want to convey to the administration and public opinion of the United States?

ANDRIOU LIVERIS: Thanks George! We have been working on this for several months to coincide with the transition period in the US Now with President Biden, as announced by his government, it is very important for the Greek community, especially in the US, to make your voice in favor of Greece, not only because of its relations with its neighbors, such as Turkey, to which it refers. the registry, but also because of its importance in Europe and why it is important that Greece’s position is not “lost” among other issues. Of course, the Prime Minister is very active in the EU. and the recent Summit made some decisions, but because of the move to the US it is extremely important that the issue becomes an important issue for the US administration.

Q: Do you think that, with all the movements of the last weeks and months, Turkey is moving away from the West?

ANDRIOU LIVERIS: His movements in the Middle East and the Middle East neighborhood and his alliances with other countries, his relationship with Russia push the relationship with the United States and Europe to a certain destabilization. And the important thing and what the registry talks about is that Greece is moving towards stability. And Greece, lately, has never seemed stronger thanks to diplomacy, but also to cooperation with its neighbors. And I think this leadership position arises as a result of the gap left by Turkey today. Of course, nobody wants a military escalation more than a diplomatic solution, but it is important to respect the rights of the neighbor. That is why Turkey will have to answer for its illegal drilling in the eastern Mediterranean.

QUESTION: Coincidentally, the US administration decided on the first sanctions against Turkey. In your opinion, is this a clear message for Ankara?

ANDRIOU LIVERIS:Minister Pompeo was very active. One would hope that, if one is consistent in the great American democracy, it is the keeping of promises to friends. Secretary Pompeo and President Trump have been active in the region and the transition period should not be used to provoke instability. And that was an important message: that American policy remains consistent, even at this time of transition. I would also like to say that President Biden is extremely careful about the position of the United States in foreign policy and I believe that Greece’s position in the United States will be strengthened under his leadership. There will be priorities in US foreign policy, and it is up to us, the Greek community, to ensure that the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the priorities in the United States.
