Alliances are deepening in the broader region of the Eastern Mediterranean, between former enemies, on the occasion of the historic agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
According to Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Randy, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received a phone call from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in the region.
The Egyptian president stressed to the Israeli prime minister that he supports Egypt in “any step” towards peace in the region, while defending the rights of the Palestinian people, according to a statement issued by the presidency on Wednesday.
In particular, the Egyptian president reaffirmed Egypt’s support for movements to achieve peace in the region in a way that preserves the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people by allowing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and security in Israel.
He also praised the recent agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel brokered by US President Donald Trump, calling it a step towards achieving peace in the region.
According to the peace agreement reached in mid-August between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, Jerusalem will not proceed with the annexation of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The United Arab Emirates is the first Gulf state and the third Arab country, after Egypt and Jordan, to sign a peace agreement with Israel.
However, al-Sisi stressed to Netanyahu that the Israeli side must not “take unilateral measures that undermine the chances of peace,” especially avoiding the annexation of Palestinian territory, Randy added.
