Violent incidents erupted in Albania on Wednesday (9/12), when hundreds took to the streets to protest against the police and the government after a 25-year-old man was fatally shot by a police officer.
Klodian Rasha, 25, was shot dead on Tuesday (12/08) during a curfew in his neighborhood, a few meters from his home, and police claimed that he was carrying a weapon.
According to Albanian media, the police said that “the young man tried to escape holding an object that looked like a pistol”, while presenting evidence with a pistol after a search in the surroundings. The Ministry of the Interior (ShCBA) refuted the police accusations and the officer who shot Rasha was arrested. and he is charged with murder.
The event provoked the anger of citizens who demand justice and speak of police arbitrariness, calling on the competent bodies and the government to be held accountable for the death of the 25-year-old.
The protesters defied the government’s ban on public gatherings of more than 10 people due to the pandemic and took to the streets, shouting slogans for Rasha and throwing stones at police and government buildings. They also set fire to a Christmas tree installed in the capital.
Groups of protesters marched towards the Interior Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office, demanding his resignation, while trying to enter the compound. Citizens clashed with the police, who fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
So far, 8 policemen and 2 protesters have been injured in the incidents.
