Arizona authorities are investigating the theft of more than 12 ballots from voters’ mailboxes and their discovery last week on a farm.
The Arizona Attorney General’s Office (AGO) said Tuesday that a farm worker found a pile of closed ballots Friday and reported it to Glendale police.
The Glendale Police Department shared on Facebook the man who made the discovery, Brayan Ruiz, who found a total of 18 ballots “under some rocks and concrete.”
“He did the right thing by returning the ballots to make sure that anyone who wanted to vote early could vote,” police said.
Glendale police officers confirmed that there were 18 ballots in envelopes that were still sealed.
According to Fox News, investigators found that the ballots had been stolen from individual mailboxes in a Glendale neighborhood.
The next day, the residents of the neighborhood “received unusual knocks on their door.”
Police released a video of Ruiz explaining how he found the ballots and then handed them over to registered voters.
A Glendale police officer and two special agents of the attorney general participated in the handover.
“All residents said they knew the early elections had not come. Some went in person to vote early and others had not yet voted,” police said.
A woman was heard saying that in the video released by police, she was wondering where her vote was and was planning to go to the polls in person.
Officials with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said there were possible more victims.
“The motive for the vote theft is currently unknown,” the board said. “At the moment, the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.”
