At least 46 people died and 60 others were injured in a riot at a prison in the western Venezuelan city of Portugesse.

Beatrice Giron, director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons for the Protection of Prisoners’ Rights, said that 46 bodies had been identified after the incident at the Los Llanos penitentiary yesterday.
Prison Minister Iris Varela told the Ultimas Noticias newspaper yesterday that the prisoners’ uprising had erupted after an escape attempt and that the prison director had been injured in a fire. It did not account for the deaths, while the Venezuelan Information Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
María Beatriz Martínez, an opposition legislator from Portugessa, said the uprising was caused by the fact that the relatives of the detainees were not allowed to bring food during the visit. Visiting restrictions are part of the country’s efforts to prevent the spread of the new crown in overcrowded prisons.
