A different visit, to the shelter for homeless and abandoned animals in Ilioupoli, was made on Saturday by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the occasion of today’s World Stray Animal Day.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis had the opportunity to meet the dogs housed at the shelter, many of whom are trained for adoption.

The Prime Minister was also briefed on the challenges faced by officials and volunteers at the shelter, which is run by the Ilioupolis Zoophilic Association, and congratulated them on the love and care they provide to the animals.

The shelter staff pointed out that it is drafted with the provisions of the draft law in preparation, which aims to solve multifaceted and chronic problems. He even asked the Prime Minister to insist, especially on the issue of sterilization.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that he has personally addressed the pet issue and that the bill is the product of extensive preparation, in consultation with all stakeholders, but hopes for fruitful participation in the public consultation, especially from people from “front line” on animal welfare issues.

The prime minister happily joined his voice with the shelter people regarding adoptions, urging citizens to lovingly welcome stray animals as members of their families: “Friends are not bought. Open your arms and save a stray”, he said, and also expressed support for adoption organized by overseas contractors.
