What do we mean? The cases, despite the confinement, do not decrease, on the contrary, they increase and even to a dangerous degree. The government has extended the confinement until carnival monday, march 15, with the aim of stopping the pandemic and at the same time decompressing the pressure on the SEN, since the ICUs are ending.
However, the data that appears daily shows that the closure in retail and catering has not brought the desired results, therefore it may be necessary to redefine a new model that combines the open economy, but with such rules that to some extent will protect citizens from the pandemic.
Of course, the reopening of the market will depend on the course of epidemiological data and mainly on the image in hospitals that will prevail in the coming days, with the government. awaiting expert comments on Friday and then the Prime Minister to decide the next steps. However, it will be significantly assessed that the focus has been on “ice” since last November, while from then until today, retail is one outside and one inside and essentially underperforms.
The ultimate goal of the government is to return to normality with careful and gradual steps to avoid further deterioration of the epidemiological picture. As for the retail resumption date, the most likely is considered to be March 16.
It is true that the opening of the stores will be carried out on the basis of the squares and a certain number of people and protection measures will be defined. In turn, the purchase will be made by sending an SMS to the new five-digit number 13032, with a maximum time limit of three hours.
According to the latest information, the opening of schools is scheduled for the last week of March, while the enigma of the outbreak seems to be unleashing in the first ten days of April.
This means that cafes, bars and restaurants will be opened, but with very strict restrictions and measures.
Gerapetritis: Then the market will open
In the “MEGA Weekend” program, the Minister of State, George Gerapetritis, spoke about the pandemic and the new restrictive measures, but also about the opening of retail.
According to the minister, we have been in a regime of extensive bans for a long time and the logic of the latest measures was to close some mobility windows.
The government’s goal is to gradually open the market and society in March. “It is a battle with time,” he characteristically said, while for the closure he stated that its extension or not will be considered in time.
He spoke about the number of cases and the amount of tests that are carried out on a daily basis and concluded that compared to other European countries, Greece is on a very good path. He estimated that by March 25 the situation will be better.
As for the retail trade, he said that its opening will be done with a system that will control mobility to the maximum and guarantee compliance with the measures. As he underlined, there is no evidence that retail is a transmitter of the virus.
“Over the next ten days there will be one last big effort to curb the spread of the virus, which will result in the opening of retail stores and schools,” he said.
Regarding the transfers from prefecture to prefecture, he affirmed that it is still too early for such a decision, however, he estimated that this Easter will be better and more open than last year.
He spoke about the health system and the rise of ICUs, but also cooperation with private clinics.
Finally, he referred to the hunger and thirst striker, Dimitris Koufontinas, saying that he was promoting an illegal right and stated that there would be a judicial decision that the Greek state would comply with.
