Length is not just running, right pressing, taking off, flying, landing, blindfolded. Much more when it comes to a great jump of athletes of the level of Miltos Tentoglou, as the first (8.35m, the highest performance in the world this year) tried George Pomaski’s “diamond”, in the final of the European Indoor Championship. Championships in Torun Poland. For such performances the conveyors fall on the table or rather touch the industrial analysis screens of the games and start the measurements.

The angle of release of the body during the shot – in simple words the angle the athlete makes from the ground during take off – plays a decisive role in the range that he will cover, until he lands in the sandbox. Tentoglou and Pomaski’s empirical transporter flashed neon as the 23-year-old athlete lifted off the valve.
“THE IDEAL CORNER”
“I found that I had improved my takeoff angle on this jump. I still don’t know how much, but I went higher than other times. Usually I take off at 20 degrees. Now, I went higher.”, he said SPORT24 Tentoglou, shortly after the final. Top-class athletes tend to form a 21 degree release angle, while jump angles range from 19 to 27 degrees. “The 24 degree angle is ideal”, said the European champion who had the scientist by his side and not just a coach, George Pomaski. The ideal, of course, differs (even slightly) from one athlete to another, as the structure of the body changes and therefore the center of gravity, which affects both the aerial phase (flight) and the degree retraction of the body during landing. It also differs from jump to jump, due to conditions.
In this case, because the event is closed, the performance was carried out with negligible air resistance. In short, the long jump is the result of take-off, flight and landing movements based on the release angle and speed of the athlete. Unlike length, the high jump requires a greater angle of release, because the athlete’s goal is not the maximum horizontal displacement, but the highest.
ROBOTIC SURGERY
The big improvements – in all areas – in the case of Tentoglou, are in the events. He is a racing athlete. He is also amazed at what he gets in them, as it looks better than in workouts. “I get this many times, as well as now that my jump was higher. It was better “, accepted.
His psychology is not easily affected. “She is a murderer, cold blooded. Very good fighter. Performs with precision”, Pomaski boasted SPORT24 and added: “All coaches want those athletes. They make our work easier. I had the stress and Miltos pushed it away from me, with the first jump. It worked like the da Vinci robotic surgical instrument!”. So accurate but also cool that it appeared in Torun. “It just came to our knowledge then. He did it with two jumps. One in the tie and one in the final. In the last month we made a lot of changes in training, it was reduced before the games. And in the final we left jumps. It has He has had a sore knee inflammation for years. Many thanks to his first coach Vangelis Papanikos who discovered and promoted him! “
After the match, Tentoglou stressed to ERT that he was going to make a leap in the final. “Yes! Of course I was more confident. I meant by that I wanted to finish in the first jumps and the performance came in the first. Even better. I go in and do it.”. However, he didn’t enjoy the fight as much as he would have liked, for exactly the same reason. Because, he tried only two jumps, the first and another empty. That is why he described the final as a “chore”. However, his great looks give him energy for Tokyo. “It just came to our attention then. That’s a good sign.”
FOR A PALINKA AND A MEDAL
George Pomaski’s athlete will leave Poland with the gold medal, the world’s top performance this year, extra wings on his feet – to help him get out of training before the Olympics – and a bottle. Full or empty … Who knows how to celebrate the gold medal in Poland? “I made a bet before the final with a girl from Hungary. She told me” if you get the gold medal I will give you a bottle of our traditional drink. How do we have tsipouro? Something like that. The drink is called Palinka. I won it. “. However, he did not make a corresponding bet with her. “Yeah! I probably should have put it too”. Miltos with joy is him. Well done!
The child of Grevena in another time, could have achieved an even higher performance. Some 20 years ago, especially in the 1990s – who operated the hostels at OAKA and the three training camps – the Athens Olympic Center was an attraction for athletes from many foreign countries. It was full of life. The Greeks trained alongside their great opponents from around the world. The exchanges of competition and exercise improved in both men and women. It was a challenge for someone to do impressive jumps next to you. It pushed you to better performance.
Of the 27 active national track and field registries for men, 17 were registered until 2002 and of the corresponding 27 registries for women, 16 until 2004! It is difficult to beat most national records, but the fact that time “freezes” for some is also related to the preparation conditions of the Greeks.
Tentoglou must be abroad for constructive preparation. And not just Tentoglou.
