Stefanos Manos’ residence – as well as the wider area – in Ekali is without electricity for more than two 24 hours, due to network problems due to bad weather. Speaking to kathimerini.gr, the former minister talks about the chaos in HEDNO and in his cooperation with municipalities, pointing out that privatization will not magically solve the problem.

“I called HEDNO myself recently and they still don’t have the slightest prospect of recovery. They haven’t even been here. It’s somewhere else!” Mr. Manos characteristically said.

“I don’t see any activity.” The road here has cables hanging but no one has come, neither from HEDNO nor from the municipality, “he added, noting that there has been no water supply in the last 24 hours.

“I really believe that this chaotic situation between HEDNO and the municipalities recalls what happened in the Mati fire, with the firefighters and municipalities that did not communicate,” he said.

The former minister considers that the privatization of HEDNO is not in itself a solution for its proper functioning: “I am not entirely sure that this is enough,” he emphasized, estimating that what is needed is to have very strict operating rules to be respected. Its observance must be ten times stricter for a company that constitutes a monopoly, such as HEDNO, ”he stressed.

“Here in Ekali, the water supply company, Ekali SA, is also private. We haven’t had water in 24 hours and when I called they attributed it to the power outage. I asked if they had a generator and they answered that … it broke down” Manos told kathimerini.gr: “Therefore, privatization is not as important as the operating rules.”

For the former minister, the solution is the burying of cables, as is the case in developed countries, and it is something evident also for Greece, as he said. Especially for areas like Ekali that often face problems, be it in summer with sparks threatening trees or in winter with severe weather. And to think that it is one of the areas that crushes them with ENFIA ”, stressed Mr. Manos.
