It is recalled that the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has posted on its website a detailed guide on what citizens should take into account during the intense meteorological phenomena that “Medea” brings.

Arnaoutoglou: We have years to see such a severe winter

In turn, the weather presenter Sakis Arnaoutoglou did not rule out the possibility of travel problems, even in large cities, Thessaly, Macedonia, including Thessaloniki, while speaking of Attica, said that “Almost all of Attica, even the coastal areas, it is not ruled out that during Monday and especially in the second half of the day we will have snowfall, especially more dense in the more mountainous and northern areas.”

As you mentioned in yesterday’s ERT3 weather report, as of today Friday, mercury is expected to show a particularly noticeable drop in northern Greece, especially in Macedonia and Thrace, but also in Thessaloniki, a strong Vardar will prevail. The northerly winds will affect much of the country on Friday (2/12) but they do not appear to drop the temperature as significantly as in the northern regions of Greece.

He also said that “essentially Friday will pass without phenomena, we will have sun with relative” teeth “in northern Greece, a harbinger of what will follow during the weekend as a serious deterioration of the weather is expected, heavy winter in the center. and mainly northern Greece on Saturday and especially on Sunday with heavy snowfalls even in coastal areas and a new significant drop in temperature “.

the Saturday (2/13) He said that snowfall is expected in Thessaloniki, which will be quite dense as we walk into the second half of the day.

“On Saturday morning there will be heavy snowfalls in the west. Macedonia, Epirus and western Thessaly – northwest. Until the afternoon and especially at night, all of northern Greece and especially Macedonia, will have heavy snowfalls.” Rains and storms on Saturday in the west and in the rest of the country, also rainy, but very cold with snowfall initially occurring in the more mountainous parts “, highlighted Mr. Arnaoutoglou.

Especially for Sunday, he said that “we have years to see such a heavy winter, as snow will appear almost everywhere. “On Sunday in the central and northern areas, non-slip chains will be needed, even in large cities.”

On Monday, while continuing “in the West and North the weather will improve only in terms of phenomena, I emphasize this. We will have snowfall in the North Aegean and sometimes dense in Evia, in the Eastern Esterea to the Eastern Peloponnese and almost All of Attica, even the coastal parts, it is not excluded that during Monday and especially in the second half of the day we will have snowfall, especially dense in more mountainous areas and in the north ”.

Is there uncertainty about where and how much it will snow?

At the same time, as reported on meteo.gr, the forecast for snowfall is by nature very uncertain and difficult, as many factors influence both intensity and extent and duration.

According to meteo.gr, in the upcoming bad weather Medea, an additional factor that increases uncertainty is the uncertain movement of a barometric low from the west to the Ionian and how this will be combined with the invasion of cold gas masses from the north.

This is evident from the multi-sample forecasts of the low barometric position for the hours of Saturday afternoon to the hours of Sunday morning. As we can see in Figure 1, the possible locations are very different from each other, with some scenarios predicting their location in the North Ionian and others in the South, while some of the possible locations are in the Central Aegean. This generates great uncertainty in the distribution of snowfall and its intensity.

For example, if a scenario is verified in which the barometric low is in the north of the Ionian, then the area of heavy snowfall will be located in western Macedonia, in the mountains of Epirus and western Thessaly. But in another scenario where the barometric low is in the central and southern Ionian, the intense phenomena will be located further south and the snowfall in Epirus will probably be located at even lower altitudes.
