Increasing intensity

Aung and others have been detained in the capital and “we assume that the army is carrying out a coup,” said Mio Newun, a spokesman for the National League for Democracy, who said he would be arrested.

A spokesman for the military did not respond to a Reuters call for comment.
Warning from the West and the US
Myanmar’s military did not explicitly rule out a coup last week to overturn the outcome of the 2020 elections, in which the ruling party claimed a landslide victory.

On Friday, Western governments, including the United States, issued a joint statement warning that they would oppose “any attempt to alter the outcome of the November elections” or “block Myanmar’s transition to democracy.”
