The great coastline of Greece presents changes and great variety to the point that it is almost impossible to know all the islands, beaches and hidden places that one can find in it.
Like the stories that can be told about the different small and large islands of the country. Especially in regards to the rocky islets that are scattered in the Aegean and Ionian, some facts are unknown to many and are of particular interest when you know them.
Did you know, for example, who is the so-called “Titanic of Greece”, who actually came very close to Athens? The reason for what happened several years ago on the island of Patroclus, which is a rocky islet in the Saronic Gulf. A shipwreck with thousands of people aboard a Norwegian ship. Today, the place where the shipwreck took place bears no resemblance to those old days and the event. All you can see from above are crystal clear turquoise waters and a green islet. Patroclus or Gaidouronisi.
Where the so-called “Titanic of Greece” happened next to Athens
The incident occurred in February 1944. It was when the Norwegian ship “Oria”, which was then ordered by the German conquerors of the Dodecanese, was used to transport 4,115 Italian prisoners from the island of Rhodes to Piraeus. Ultimately, the ship with the Italian prisoners never reached its destination due to various factors. It was a combination of very bad weather and the attack by British warships, but also several construction problems that the “Limits” had. All of this resulted in one that led to one of the deadliest shipwrecks in maritime history.
According to the Youtube channel Updrones He posted a relevant video of the island where the Germans left the drowned Italian prisoners defenseless. The next morning, the spectacle with the dead soldiers on Harakas beach was shocking as many of them were washed ashore. There were so many dead soldiers lying on the shore one on top of the other.
Regarding the conditions of the wreck, reports say that the ship “Oria” spontaneously sank on the rock “Medina” of the island of Patroclus in the Saronic Gulf in the early morning of 12 February. Thus leading to the death of some 4,000 people.
