The new torpedoes have the ability to be launched from much greater distances, to be aimed with absolute precision, not to be affected by countermeasures and to cause more serious damage since they carry a greater quantity of explosives.
More specifically, the DM2A4 is a 533mm wired guide torpedo. and it has double function, that is, it can attack both surface ships and submarines. The DM2A4 is powered by a battery operated electric motor. It has a head of 260 kg. Highly explosive PBX (Polymer-bonded explosive) polymer-bonded explosive, with a power equivalent to 460 kg. TNT, although depending on the version it is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 50 knots and a range of up to 50 km. DM2A4 guidance is a combination of wired guidance (via fiber optic, making it the first operational fiber optic guided torpedo) and active and passive sonar and magnetic tube.
The DM-2A4 also has a special version with an electric battery set with only “wake up home” capability, ie following the waters of the ship. In the event that the fiber optic cable is cut, the torpedo has the possibility of an autonomous continuation of target engagement.
Greece has one of the best submarine fleets in the world, while the knowledge of the Aegean by the Greek crews, who have mapped all points of the Archipelago’s seabed, is a great advantage.
It is well known that the Turks literally “shake” the Greek submarines. Proof of this is that they look for them daily and for hours with helicopters and anti-submarine warfare planes. They know very well that each of their ships is permanently in the crosshairs of the “invisible hunters” who can send them to the bottom in a few minutes.
