It is not only Germany that supports the Turkish regime – With behind-the-scenes movements, the “komitatzides” of the Balkans are acting against Greece – Their position at the Summit and their “dirty” past.
There are times when you tell your friends in distress. Our relations with Bulgaria, especially in the economic sphere, have improved compared to the past, as both countries want mutually beneficial economic growth. But the same does not seem to be the case in foreign policy, since our interests move diametrically opposite, following a conflictive course.
The most worrying thing is that Bulgaria’s positions rarely align with Turkey’s– a reality that we saw take shape at the recent EU Summit in December, where Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov was one of the most fervent advocates of neighbor sanctions.
This ambiguous attitude of Bulgaria towards our country, which is based on the yes “We are brothers of Greece” but also Turkey is an important partner in the region, is not recent. If we look to the pastWe will see that the cases in which Bulgaria supported Turkey in its absurd objections are not few. This may be the result of the long-standing good relations between Turkish President Erdogan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov, as they were mayors of Istanbul and Sofia respectively, but this condition is certainly not sufficient in international relations.
Borisov has shown his support for Erdogan in many ways. and especially during the signing of the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum, then at the December 2019 Summit, once again took a clear position in favor of Turkey stating that: “I told my Greek colleagues to find the tools to help themselves. We support them in every way, but Turkey plays a very important role in the region today.”, to add that “Turkey is in a very important geostrategic position”. Such clear statements show a lot …
This was immediately followed by a hybrid attack by Turkey on the Greek-Turkish border last March. There, the trust relationship that has recently developed between Bulgaria and Turkey undoubtedly played its part, as “curiously” all illegal immigrants were channeled exclusively to Greece, at the same time that the Turkish-Bulgarian border was completely calm.
In fact, the Bulgarian Prime Minister went so far as to state openly that he had the guarantee of the Turkish President that “Ankara will remain committed to not allowing immigration to put pressure on Bulgaria”! This made many wonder whether the borders of Bulgaria and Turkey are borders of Europe or not. Of course it is, but Turkey has chosen our country to put pressure on it by instrumentalizing immigration and exploiting human suffering. And the above attitude is certainly related to Tsavousoglu’s previous visit to Bulgaria at the end of January, where the weather was more than good.
But the latest and most typical example we saw at the recent EU Summit, where leaders were called upon to impose sanctions on provocative Turkey for its continued illegal behavior in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond. The result; The German Chancellor and the Bulgarian Prime Minister were EU leaders who openly opposed sanctions against Ankara., as EU sources reported, causing surprise since, on the one hand, Germany may have previously expressed reservations about the harsh sanctions on the neighbor, but on the other hand, such open support from Turkey by Bulgaria, might not have expected it. .
Even after this development, it makes sense strange associations arise from the past. Because, as is well known, in World War II, the Bulgarians allied themselves with Nazi Germany, allowing in April 1941 the SS armored divisions to use their territory to invade our country, waiting and taking – for a short time, the Tripoli Occupation of our country: the lands it eagerly desired since its founding. In the end, it seems that the interests of states do not change so easily and, sadly, history repeats itself once more …
In the final analysis, it turns out that the interests and utilitarian approach of some states will prevail over law and logic. Bulgaria, although a member of the EU, has also been affected by the clumsy Turkish interventions in the Balkans, with its position so far and especially at the last Summit. threatens to blow up EU cohesion, but He “turned his back” on the “neighborhood bully.” In conclusion we had it all We miss Bulgaria!
