Nikos Hardalias announced the opening of kindergartens and elementary schools, as well as kindergartens from Monday 11/1. Regarding the opening of schools in the “red” areas, he asked the neighbors to be very consistent in complying with the measures.
Mr. Hardalias indicated that the epidemiological data will be evaluated weekly and based on these, the measures that will be applied will be announced.
Papaevangelou: We are still waiting for the increase in cases of the holidays – The increase in hospitalizations in Attica is worrying
Vana Papaevangelou said during today’s briefing: “The steady increase in coronavirus cases seen in Attica is remarkable, as is the increase in the epidemiological burden in various parts of the country. Overall, there is a stabilization of cases in the country. Our country in relation to Europe presents a very good epidemiological picture and we are still waiting for the cases of the holidays.
Following the toughest indicators, such as hospital admissions and ICUs, there is a very small and negligible decrease. There is a 20% -25% increase in Attica patients since November. At all costs we must correct the possible increase in cases caused by the holidays. The image of last November can come quickly, if we are not careful. “Although the vaccines have started, the pandemic will affect us for several more months.”
Papaevangelou: “Schools are the first to open”
The professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Expert Committee then spoke about the decision to open primary education in the country as of Monday. “Schools are the last to close and the first to open,” he said, adding: “We all see the burden that many children face by staying at home for long periods of time. The outlook is better in terms of age distribution, as there is a decrease in new diagnoses in people over 65 years of age. “The NSS is still decongesting, but in the last 10 days decongestion has slowed down,” said Gikas Majorkinis.
Speaking about the coronavirus mutation, Gikas Majorkinis noted that it has been detected in at least 40 countries, while noting that signs that it is spreading faster are strengthening.

“The next period has many characteristics of high criticality,” said Majorkinis, who presented the ECDC map, with the positivity index, in which Greece appears with a percentage below 4%. “We have to maintain the situation in the country and the only way is with effort,” said the assistant professor.
“The next two months are expected to be colder, something that raises concerns about the pandemic in the country,” Gikas Majorkinis said shortly before closing his statement. “It makes sense to feel relaxed and have a false sense of security. But we are not there yet and we will have to have a little patience,” he continued, referring to the ongoing vaccination process.
