Papaevangelou: We are still waiting for the increase in cases of the holidays – The increase in hospitalizations in Attica is worrying
Vana Papaevangelou said during today’s briefing: “The steady increase in coronavirus cases seen in Attica is remarkable, as is the increase in the epidemiological burden in various parts of the country. Overall, there is a stabilization of cases in the country. Our country in relation to Europe presents a very good epidemiological picture and we are still waiting for the cases of the holidays.
Following the toughest indicators, such as hospital admissions and ICUs, there is a very small and negligible decrease. There is a 20% -25% increase in Attica patients since November. At all costs we must correct the possible increase in cases caused by the holidays. The image of last November can come quickly, if we are not careful. “Although the vaccines have started, the pandemic will affect us for several more months.”
Papaevangelou: “Schools are the first to open”
The professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Expert Committee then spoke about the decision to open primary education in the country as of Monday. “Schools are the last to close and the first to open,” he said, adding: “We all see the burden that many children face by staying at home for long periods of time. Most European countries have managed to sustain learning. permanent, despite the measures taken against the virus. We continue to support that there is no increase in transmission within schools. “
Papaevangelou: “Attendance and gradual exit from school”
Finally, Vana Papaevangelou, added for the schools that will be opened with “additional measures”, such as “the gradual arrival and departure of students and teachers to reduce synchronicity.” Meanwhile, he added: “Our goal is to keep primary schools open and to open secondary education soon. We are concerned about any broadcasting during the holidays because of this and our suggestions are very careful, we go step by step to decide to have the best possible image ”.
The pandemic is increasing around the world
Taking the floor, Majorkinis noted that the coronavirus now has more than 90 million diagnoses, of which 63 million have recovered. Also, he said, active infections rose to 23 million.
Worldwide, the transmission of the coronavirus has been at its peak since the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, an average of 15,000 daily deaths are recorded worldwide. And in Europe, there is an increase in new cases, estimated at 275,000 per day.
Germany is under pressure, in the third wave of the pandemic Great Britain
Referring to specific countries, the assistant professor at the EKPA Faculty of Medicine noted that the epidemic shows signs of stabilization with slight upward trends in France. Germany is also showing signs of stabilization, although the coronavirus pandemic remains at its highest level since the start of the pandemic.
Finally, Gikas Majorkinis estimated that in Great Britain the epidemic is officially in the third wave, which is more intense than the second and exceeds 60,000 diagnoses of the new coronavirus per day. In Italy, finally, there is a stabilization of cases.
The wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Greece is receding
Referring to our country, Mr. Majorkinis pointed out that the reduction of active cases continues and the pressure on the NSS continues to decrease. As an indication, he stated that there is a 60% decrease in hospital admissions.
Regarding the epidemiological picture by region, Attica stabilization and a slight upward trend were observed towards the end of the week. By contrast, Thessaloniki continues to show signs of a steady decline.
The outlook is better in terms of age distribution, as there is a decrease in new diagnoses in people over 65 years of age. “The NSS is still decongesting, but in the last 10 days decongestion has slowed down,” said Gikas Majorkinis.
Speaking about the coronavirus mutation, Gikas Majorkinis noted that it has been detected in at least 40 countries, while noting that signs that it is spreading faster are strengthening.
We are concerned about the drop in temperature in the next period
“The next period has many characteristics of high criticality,” said Majorkinis, who presented the ECDC map, with the positivity index, in which Greece appears with a percentage below 4%. “We have to maintain the situation in the country and the only way is with effort,” said the assistant professor.
“The next two months are expected to be colder, something that raises concerns about the pandemic in the country,” Gikas Majorkinis said shortly before closing his statement. “It makes sense to feel relaxed and have a false sense of security. But we are not there yet and we will have to have a little patience,” he continued, referring to the ongoing vaccination process.
